Dr Sonia Ahmed

Dr Sonia Ahmed Hi I am a Counselling Psychologist based in Sunderland. Availabe in person & online. www.serenepsychology.com Welcome to Serene Psychology.

I am the founder of Serene Psychology, and have a small team that can offer 1-1 therapy across the lifespan, couples therapy, & family therapy. I’m a Counselling Psychologist and EMDR Therapist with over 10 years of experience in mental health, specializing in trauma & PTSD, with a particular focus on domestic abuse, and honour-based abuse. My mission is to help you reclaim your voice, find your f

reedom, and heal from the effects of trauma in a safe and supportive environment. Through 1:1 therapy sessions, I use proven techniques like EMDR and compassionate, tailored approaches to guide you on your journey toward recovery and inner calm. Beyond therapy, I also develop and deliver training for professionals and survivors of domestic abuse. These training programs are designed to build awareness, enhance understanding, and provide tools for resilience and recovery. Whether you're looking for personal growth or professional development, my programs aim to make a meaningful impact. I use social media to share empowering and educational content about domestic abuse, offering a supportive space for survivors, and raising awareness about this critical issue. If you’re ready to take the next step toward healing or would like to learn more about my training programs, I’m here to help. Contact me today to book a therapy session or explore opportunities to work together. You don’t have to face this alone – together, we can work toward a brighter, more peaceful future. I offer online and face to face therapy sessions.

Did you know that healing from domestic abuse isn’t just about “getting over it”? It’s about reclaiming your story, your power, and your future. 🦋

As a trauma therapist, I’ve witnessed the incredible strength of survivors who take that brave first step towards healing. Through our sessions, we work together to build a toolkit of practical coping strategies, understand trauma responses, and gradually rebuild self-trust.

Together, we explore:
📍 Creating safety and stability in your daily life
📍 Understanding trauma responses and triggers
📍 Rebuilding boundaries and self-worth
📍 Developing healthy relationships with yourself and others

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. If you’re ready to take that first step, I’m here to walk alongside you with compassion, understanding, and professional support.

You’re not “too sensitive.” You’re reacting to years of walking on eggshells.

Has anyone ever told you to “stop being so sensitive”? Or made you feel silly for being cautious about how you act or what you say?

Here’s the thing - when you’ve spent years trying to keep the peace, always watching for warning signs, and trying to avoid upset, your body learns to stay on high alert. It’s like your internal alarm system is always switched on.

It’s not you being dramatic. It’s not you being too much. It’s your body remembering how to protect you.

The good news? You don’t have to live like this forever. Together, we can help you feel more relaxed and confident in yourself again.

If this sounds familiar, I’m here to help. Pop me a message through the link in my bio for a friendly chat about how we can work together. ❤️

This is an amazing way to destress and switch off!

We are so excited to announce that on Monday 17th February 6:30-7:30pm we will be hosting a Sound Bath at our Wellbeing Hub! ✨
This is a deeply relaxing experience, where you are immersed in soothing sounds and vibrations, created by instruments like crystal singing bowls, gongs, Tibetan bowls, and chimes. These harmonious sounds work to calm the mind, relax the body, and restore your energy balance.
Participants must be over 16. If you would like to bring your own cushion/blanket/yoga mat you are more than welcome to. For further information, medical terms & conditions or to book a space, please contact Leigh Ann on leigh.ann@sunderlandmind.co.uk or 01915657218

Many people think therapy is ‘too’ expensive but they don’t see all of the costs that therapists pay behalf this. This is a great example for counsellor, add in a further £30 thousand plus, for psychologists doctoral fees, amongst others. Private therapy is a niche in itself.

Remember by taking the step to engage in therapy you are INVESTING IN YOURSELF.

Private therapy can be costly 💰 And it can feel tricky to work out how a counsellor’s fee equates to value for money.

So, what does your counsellor's fee include?

Trauma can significantly impact confidence and self-esteem, often leading to feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, and self-doubt. Individuals may struggle with negative self-image, fear of vulnerability, and difficulty trusting others, which can affect their ability to engage in relationships and pursue goals.

Making a few changes and taking some positive steps can help regain confidence and self esteem after a traumatic event.

What do you enjoy doing that’s just for you?

Taking time out for yourself and doing things you love is an important part of self love and healing. I love trying new restaurants and cafes. I love a good cup of coffee, and a cheeky slice of cake every now and again.

Self-care is crucial if you have or do suffer from trauma or PTSD because it promotes emotional regulation, reduces stress, and encourages a sense of safety and control. Engaging in self-care practices can help you process your experiences, build resilience, and improve overall mental health, making it easier to heal and recover.
