In the 1980s, millions suffered from stomach ulcers. Doctors blamed stress and spicy food. But Dr. Barry Marshall believed a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori was the real cause.

Nobody listened. His research was rejected. Drug companies didn’t care—they were making billions from antacid drugs.

So Marshall did something insane: he drank the live bacteria himself.

Within days, he became seriously ill—just like his ulcer patients. Then he took antibiotics... and cured himself.

That one risky experiment proved ulcers were caused by H. pylori, not stress. It changed treatment worldwide. No more stomach surgeries—just a short course of antibiotics.

Marshall won the Nobel Prize in 2005. Today, he’s using the same bacteria to develop treatments for allergies and eczema through his biotech company Ondek.

8 AI tools from OpenAI you should try

1- ChatGPT, needs no further introduction. one of the best for general text-related tasks.

2- DALL-E, for image generation from text descriptions.

3- Codex, AI for code generation. It can write complete programs, such as building a website for you.

4- Whisper, automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, can transcribe, recognize, and translate audio recordings into text in multiple languages.

5- Gym/ Gymnasium, an open-source toolkit for developing and comparing reinforcement learning algorithms. Gymnasium serves as a drop-in replacement for Gym, with all the latest updates.

6- RoboSumo, an open-source toolkit, a simulated robotics environment based on Gym, specifically designed for robot-to-robot sumo competitions.

7- CLIP, open-source AI model that connects text and images in meaningful ways, almost understanding all information from an image.

8- AI Dungeon, for generating stories and game scenarios.
*Initially heavily reliant on OpenAI's llms, it is now independent.

SSRIs Restore Brain Function in Alzheimer’s

In a study of Alzheimer’s patients, researchers discovered that long-term SSRI use correlates with both lower tau pathology and improved brain metabolism in serotonin-linked regions.

Using PET imaging and blood biomarkers, they observed that the DRN—a brainstem region hit early by Alzheimer’s—was less metabolically active in patients, but SSRI treatment reversed this decline.

This finding suggests that SSRIs may help restore some brain function in AD through serotonin pathways.

Notably, this change was unique to patients with Alzheimer’s and did not occur in cognitively normal individuals.

Despite these neurobiological improvements, the effect of SSRIs on cognitive function was mixed and depended heavily on the specific test used.

The study points to potential for SSRIs as a disease-modifying therapy, while calling for further targeted trials.

Sitting for Hours May Shrink the Brain

A new study shows that prolonged sedentary behavior in adults over 50 is linked to cognitive decline and brain shrinkage in areas vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers tracked activity levels in 404 participants using wearable devices and followed their brain health for seven years.

Even among those who exercised regularly, high amounts of sitting time were associated with worse cognitive performance and structural brain changes.

The effect was especially strong in individuals who carry the APOE-e4 gene, a known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s.

This suggests that breaking up sitting time throughout the day is important, regardless of overall fitness levels.

The findings point to reduced sedentary behavior as a promising lifestyle strategy to protect brain health and delay cognitive aging.

Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of USC have developed a blood test that can identify early signs of Alzheimer's disease by measuring proteins linked to the condition. The new test, known as Penta-Plex Alzheimer's Disease Capture Sandwich Immunoassay (5ADCSI), detects five biomarkers sim...

England has made a major leap in cancer treatment with the introduction of a new injection that targets 15 different types of cancer, including skin cancer and solid tumours originating in the kidneys. This revolutionary immunotherapy jab, called nivolumab, drastically reduces treatment time—allowing patients to receive care in just five minutes, compared to the traditional 30 to 60-minute IV infusion, according to The Independent.

With approximately 1,200 patients expected to benefit each month, England is the first country in Europe to implement this rapid-injection therapy. By streamlining cancer care and enhancing the patient experience, this innovation marks a bold step forward in the fight against cancer.
