November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to shine a light on the challenges many men face and to encourage open, honest conversations.

Mental health affects everyone, but many men face unique barriers when it comes to asking for help. In fact, research shows that 1 in 8 men in England will experience a mental health problem.

Alongside professional support, peer groups play a powerful role in improving men’s wellbeing. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can reduce feelings of isolation and create a real sense of belonging.

Andys Man Club Sunderland meet every Monday at 7pm, offering a welcoming, non-judgmental space for men to talk, listen, and support one another.

Day 5 of Safeguarding Week: Celebrate the Safer Cultures

Thank you to everyone who participated in Safeguarding Week 2025. We had lots of fun in the office today promoting adult safeguarding! 💚 Niall and Ruby promoted “Green is the theme” out in the community 🤪

Carers Guessed the Number of Sweets in the Jar 🍬
There were 70 sweets in the jar — the estimated number of adult safeguarding concerns raised every hour!
Congratulations to Julie Wallace, who guessed 73 and came closest. Please pop in to collect your prize!

Carers Guessed the Safeguarding Sloth’s Name 🦥
We had lots of brilliant name suggestions, including Rodger, Dave, Sid, Henry, Charlie, Gerald, Slowmo, Dick, Jimmy and Sedric.
The sloth’s actual name was Sonny — great guesses, everyone!

Carers Took Part In A Safeguarding Quiz 🧐
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the quiz. It was a fun way to test your safeguarding knowledge!
A big well done to Niall, who scored an impressive 20/21. Enjoy your chocolate prize! 🍫

Many staff contributed to the Safeguarding Tree. With a bit of teamwork, we helped identify a personal commitment for each of you to promote in your role 💚🌳

Raising awareness of safeguarding is so important, it protects individuals' rights to live safely and with dignity, preventing them from abuse and neglect. It ensures a person's well-being, supports their ability to make choices, and promotes independence while providing necessary support when they are at risk.

Stay safe by:

❄️Wearing warm layers and sturdy, non-slip footwear.

❄️Driving cautiously and clearing all ice and snow from your vehicle first. Plan your journeys and leave earlier.

Day 3 of Safeguarding Week: Reporting and Procedures

💚Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
If you ever have a concern — big or small — reporting it could protect someone from harm.

🛡️ What should you report?
Anything that makes you feel uneasy about someone’s safety or wellbeing, including:
• Signs of abuse or neglect
• Concerning behaviour
• Disclosures from a child or adult
• Gut feelings that something isn’t right

📞 Who should you report to?
Always report concerns directly to our Safeguarding Lead, who will ensure the right steps are taken quickly and confidentially.
If the concern is urgent or someone is in immediate danger, contact Emergency Services or your Local Authority Safeguarding Team straight away, for example Sunderland City Council 01915205552.

Together, we can keep our community safe. 💚
Speak up. Report early. Protect others.

💚We're supporting Adult Safeguarding Week💚
It's so important to think about how we can establish safer cultures within our communities and organisations. By sharing knowledge and working in partnership with each other, we can all improve our safeguarding of vulnerable adults.

Today is about proactive intervention — the positive steps individuals and organisations can take to create safer environments that actively prevent abuse. Sport clubs, community groups, and other organisations can build inclusive, resilient spaces where people look out for one another by strengthening connection, promoting openness, and empowering everyone to speak up. By amplifying individual voices, we can reduce the risks of harm, neglect, and isolation.

And while we’re shifting the focus toward prevention, we’re not losing sight of the need to recognise poor practice early, so it can be addressed before it escalates.

Keep a lookout for our safeguarding mascot as he makes his way around the community.🦥💚
