Thank you so much to the people who have taken the time to respond to this! It’s been amazing hearing so many stories!
Still time if you haven’t shared yours yet!
As part of our new production Willow’s on the Wear; a fresh retelling of The Wind in the Willows set on the banks of the River Wear - we’d love to hear from you!
What we’re inviting:
Whether you grew up playing along its banks, worked on boats or in shipyards, fished from its edges, or simply found solace watching its ever-changing flow we want to know your stories!
Childhood memories, working life by the river, glimpses of everyday life by the Wear… whatever matters to you, we’d love to capture it. Your words will help shape a beautiful, locally-rooted story: one performed by our community company and local primary schools.
Why it matters:
The River Wear is woven into the heart of the North East, monuments of industry, quiet reflections, and shared daily rhythms all belong to its story. Sharing your experience helps honour that living connection: the regattas, the glassworks, the ships, the fishermen, the wildlife, the bridges built and rebuilt across generations. By stepping forward, you help bring those memories to life. Whether it was casting a fishing line at Durham, watching the Northern Spire bridge awaken each morning, or a childhood game beneath Elvet Bridge, your perspective is precious.
A few notes:
We may not be able to include every story in the Play, but if we use yours, we’ll let you know, and credit you fully.
You’re welcome to share as little or as much as you like, in your own words.
Feel free to add a brief intro like “I grew up in Bishopwearmouth in the 1980s…” or “I worked summers at a glassworks near the river in my twenties…”
From all of us at Atlas Theatre Company CIC, thank you for considering sharing your story. Together, we can create something that feels real, rooted, and full of the spirit of the Wear and the people who live by it. We can’t wait to hear your voice.
