In the health and care system in the North East and North Cumbria, we want to be the best at getting better – with continuous learning and improvement at the heart of everything we do, and in the way in which we work. Through the sharing of learning, ideas, and good practice, and by trying new things together, we can find solutions to the challenges we face, and support each other to make a difference to the health of people living in our region. Building on past successes like the North East Transformation System and CLIC (Cumbria Learning and Improvement Collaborative), the Boost learning and improvement community brings together people with a passion for improvement, innovation and change in health and care. Boost ultimately serves as a hub for innovation, idea-sharing, networking, and supporting improvement efforts.

🌿 Tackling air pollution together

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals and Northumbria Healthcare have joined forces to improve local air quality and protect community health.

At the UKHSA Air Pollution Event (Nov 2025), both trusts showcased their collaborative project reviewing hospital sites against the Clean Air Hospitals Framework and installing low‑cost diffusion tubes at the RVI, Freeman Hospital and Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

This ongoing monitoring will provide vital data to pinpoint where action is most needed to reduce harmful pollution. The event highlighted the region’s commitment to cleaner air and healthier futures.

🚗 You can help too!
Simple actions - like avoiding car engine idling - make a real difference. Our regional No Idling commitment is already making strides.

🌟 National recognition for pioneering cardio‑renal‑metabolic care!

Huge congratulations to the Gateshead Secondary Prevention Service, winner of the Medicines, Pharmacy and Prescribing Initiative of the Year at the 2025 HSJ Awards 🎉

Led by Dr Su Ann Tee and Jonathan Fenwick, the team is the first in the UK to bring cardiology, kidney care, diabetes, stroke and pharmacy specialists together in one integrated clinic - supporting people recovering from heart attacks, strokes, TIAs, angina and circulation problems.

Since 2023, their personalised, joined‑up approach has improved outcomes, boosted medication adherence and delivered real value for the local health system. Judges praised the team’s ambition, collaboration and impact.

✨ Reduced waste & environmental impact
✨ Cost savings and streamlined procurement
