The amber cold health alert has been extended and is in effect from 10AM on 6 January 2026 until 12PM on 11 January 2026 across the North East ⚠️

That means colder weather could affect some of us, especially those who might need a little extra help.

❄️ There is also an ice warning in place from 12AM to 10AM on Wednesday 7 January 2026, with icy patches likely to develop overnight.

Here’s how we can all look out for each other:

- Pop by to check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours
- Keep your home warm – ideally above 18°C
- Make sure you have necessary medications and supplies

Exciting proposals have been unveiled for a £15 million retail development that could bring over 100 new jobs to Sunderland.

The plans include:

✅ A new Aldi store
✅ A Starbucks drive-through

The development would be built on disused land at Silksworth Lane, opposite Sainsbury’s and The Range, and will include improved pedestrian links, a large car park, and a new crossing for safer access

Public consultation is now open

Residents are invited to share their views before 12 January 2026

With further sleet and snow expected into tomorrow, and a Met Office snow and ice warning until 11am on Tuesday, our Winter Maintenance teams remain on standby 24/7, monitoring weather and road conditions to decide treatments as needed.

❄️ A snowy Sunderland ❄️

The first snowfall of 2026 has brought a real winter feel to the city today.

Penshaw Monument standing proud on the snow-topped hill and Hylton Castle looking straight out of a fairy-tale. Big, bright views across Riverside Sunderland as the river edges turn white, leading over to a snow-covered Stadium of Light looking quiet for now, but never for long.

We've seen lots of people out and about today - sledging, enjoying the snowy walks and taking in the wintry views.

If you’re heading out, please take care and enjoy safely. Or scroll through the album and enjoy the wintry city scenery from the comfort of your own sofa – with a nice hot cuppa ☕️

Not long left to let us know what you think about our budget proposals. We work hard to provide over 600 services to residents and businesses across Sunderland but we continue to face very difficult funding decisions. We need your views on our proposed approach to the Budget to meet the funding gap as well as hearing what you think about a proposed council tax increase. Your feedback will help shape our detailed budget proposals.

Do you support our approach? What are your thoughts on council tax increases? Do you have any other ideas or comments which we could help bridge the gap?

Complete the survey at https://orlo.uk/vfWap by 11 January 2026 to let us know your thoughts.
