Men who practice yoga move better, sleep better and breathe better. My original men’s group have progressed so much since we began just over a year ago that I’m starting a new beginner’s group. Just for men. It’s a friendly and relaxed space to learn the foundations of yoga.

🧘‍♀️ Can Yoga Alone Prevent Bone & Muscle Loss? 🦴💪

Do you love yoga but think you should be doing resistance training too? Do you worry whether your yoga practice is enough to keep your bones and muscles strong as you age?

You are right to be thinking about this issue. Here’s what the latest research says and it might be different to what you previously thought…

✨ Bone Density:
A 10-year study found that just 12 minutes of daily yoga can increase bone density in the spine and femur! Yoga also boosts your balance, reducing your risk of falls and fractures. But the study wasn’t conclusive and it suggested that yoga wasn’t enough on its own.

✨ Muscle Mass:
Another study found that older women practicing yoga at least twice a week had higher muscle mass and lower body fat than non-exercisers. Yoga is a form of body weight training and it helps your body use protein more efficiently, which is key for keeping muscles strong.

⚠️ But here’s the thing….
is amazing and makes you feel fantastic. It is excellent for improving flexibility, posture, and joint health, but it may not offer the same bone-strengthening and muscle building benefits as weight training or resistance exercises.

That’s why now, experts are recommending you combine yoga with other weight-bearing activities for the best results - especially if you’re at risk for osteoporosis.

What’s the bottom line?
Yoga is a powerful tool for healthy aging, but for optimal bone and muscle health, experts recommend mixing it up with other forms of exercise! 🏋️‍♂️🚶‍♀️

And that’s why I’ve created YogaStrong to combine yoga and weights for the perfect total wellbeing practice combination.

Just finalised my new timetable adding lots of fantastic new classes - Yoga Strong with weights, Yoga Chill - Restorative Yoga, extra Yoga & Pilates Fusion and Chair / Gentle Yoga classes. Plus all my original classes - Yoga Flow on Tuesdays and Saturdays and Hatha Yoga on a Thursday evening.

Chair Yoga now runs twice weekly on a Monday and a Friday at 10.30.

Yoga for Men is running every Monday now at 7.30pm.

All my chair yoga classes follow the Yoga4Health programme, the yoga model developed in partnership with the NHS and used by GPs for social prescribing.

One to one yoga and personalised yoga therapy courses are also available - please contact me to discuss your individual circumstances.

Your breath is the most powerful tool you have for transforming your wellbeing? And that’s why anyone and everyone can do yoga. If you can breathe you can do yoga and we can all breathe. Just some people need help to really make the most of their breathing.

Without the breath there’s no difference between yoga and going to any old fit class. So whilst many people just focus on perfecting yoga poses, the truth is that conscious, coherent breathing is where the real magic happens!

Your breath is the only bodily function that operates both automatically AND under your conscious control. This unique quality makes it the perfect bridge between your conscious mind and your autonomic nervous system.

🧠 THE BREATH-NERVOUS SYSTEM CONNECTION:
When you’re stressed, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid, triggering your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight response). But when you consciously slow and deepen your breath, you activate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest mode), literally changing your biochemistry within minutes! Learning how you can control these responses using your breath is what yoga therapists call developing vagal tone. It makes you more resilient, calm and confident. Amazing really.

💫 THIS IS WHY:
• Long exhales stimulate the vagus nerve, releasing calming neurotransmitters
• Diaphragmatic breathing increases oxygen exchange and lowers cortisol levels going you energy
• Rhythmic breathing synchronises heart rate and brain waves, creating coherence
• Breath awareness brings you into the present moment, reducing anxiety about past/future events.

In yoga therapy we don’t just move with the breath—we transform THROUGH the breath. It’s not just about doing yoga; it’s about becoming more aware, regulated, and present in every aspect of life.

Why Be Happy Yoga?

Hello, I'm Lesley Muir and a Yoga Alliance Qualified Teacher specialising in active, Vinyasa Flow style yoga classes.

I love yoga. It has helped me discover how to be happy and live in the moment, which is something I think everyone can relate to today. After enjoying a daily practice for many years, I decided to train as a teacher and completed my 200 hour teacher training course in July 2018.

My classes are designed to combine physical training with the chance to re-balance and de-stress. They are ideal for runners, cyclists and anyone else who wants to combine their sports training with yoga classes to improve flexibility and strength. People who want a yoga class that's slightly faster paced and more challenging will also enjoy my sessions.

Tailored for all abilities, each class starts and ends with pranayama breathing and a short meditation to calm the mind and help you to develop a greater ability to focus and concentrate.
