🌟 Patient Success Story! 🌟

John suffered a stroke in December 2024. When we first met, John struggled to get out of bed and was unable to get downstairs, or use his left arm. John and his wife have both worked really hard with physio and he is now managing to walk around the park again with a stick, and practices the stairs daily despite having had a stairlift installed! He is also managing to draw again with his left hand. Brilliant work John!

🌟 Patient Achievement! 🌟

Sebastian suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2019 and continues to work extremely hard on all aspects of his rehabilitation with his team.

Recently, Sebastian achieved his latest goal of walking outdoors and into his favourite cafe without a walking frame or wheelchair for the first time since his brain injury six years ago.

The staff at the cafe were amazed to see his progress and he even got his coffee free of charge in celebration!

Sebastian is an inspiration and shows that hard work and determination can make such a difference.

Do you have a walking aid you no longer need? 🩼

From Wednesday 7 May, patients and relatives can bring unwanted walking aids to Good Hope Hospital to be recycled and reused. You can drop off items like:
• Walking sticks
• Zimmer frames
• Elbow crutches.

Look for the drop-off box at the entrance to the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Centre. If your aid has a Medequip barcode on it, please don’t drop it off – call 0121 503 8850 for collection options.

This pilot project, led by Hayley White, a Reconditioning Clinical Specialist, aims to help reduce waste, save money, and cut carbon emissions. Reusing crutches, frames and walking sticks provide an excellent opportunity for carbon savings due to the high greenhouse gas intensity of aluminium manufacture.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions, increasing the amount of walking aids that are returned and reused can also help improve access for patients and save money.
