October is ADHD awareness month. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder and is characterised by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
ADHD however, is not just one narrowly defined experience. ADHD is fluid. Experiences can be shared, but they can also present differently depending on the individual. An individual may experience more symptoms of inattention, or more symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity, or a combination of both types of symptoms. ADHD does not look one way, each individual with ADHD may experience and present with ADHD differently and this may change across an individual’s lifespan.
When choosing a diagnostic service, consider a service that strives to understand you within the context of your life, experiences, development and values. Consider a service that does not just offer a diagnostic label, but a report and understanding about you as an individual, that presents difference in the context of strength, not solely focused on deficit. Where a diagnosis is offered, choose a service that helps you understand what that diagnosis really means for you, and helps you to move forward in a meaningful way. Where a diagnosis is not appropriate think about a service that doesn’t just close the door, but helps you to consider your next steps.
At WMAAAS we are proud to offer our clients an individualised service that will help you to find the answers you are looking for, whatever the outcome. Led by clinical psychologists, experts in understanding human behaviour and psychological presentation, you can expect a very detailed, in depth assessment, including objective measures of ADHD (e.g. computerised QB eye tracking tests), standardised clinical interview and full developmental history taking including school and medical review. Furthermore we operate as a multidisciplinary service with access to colleagues of other specialties where required.
