This week we had some intruders in the barn... we could do with some help giving our pinecone creatures some names if anyone has any ideas?!
We had a great time making these, and getting into the autumn spirit!

Here we are collecting cones for craft projects, and feeding the Giant African Land Snails. These ones are just babies! Giant African Land Snails need lots of greenery so we've got them some cress and some cucumber to go with their planted herbs. They also need protein and calcium so we are soaking some pinto beans to sprout for them. They have a bioactive tank, which means it mostly looks after itself - the orange woodlice act as the clean-up crew, eating anything the snails leave behind and helping keep the soil in good condition.

Care with Heart

Care with Heart is a small, family- and community-based service for people with learning disabilities in South Oxfordshire and beyond.

The service began with Sophia Trinder, a learning disabilities and childrens nurse. Sophia has been passionate about the care and support of people with learning disabilities since 1998 when she began volunteering at Disability Challengers in Guildford as a teenager, as a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. What started as a 3-month placement became a vocation: Sophia remained at Challengers until she went to Oxford Brookes University to study learning disabilities nursing, qualifiying in 2004. Sophia was privileged to work at Hernes House and Viking House, and later at The Chiltern Centre for Disabled Children, developing her experience of supporting children and young adults with learning disabilities and complex needs in respite settings. Sophia became deputy manager for The Chiltern Centre in 2014, and in 2016 decided the time was right to move on.

Sophia’s passion has always been for direct care, and she initially became self-employed and started a small service supporting people with learning disabilities and complex needs in the community and in her home. Sophia firmly believes in person-centred care and in focused, 1:1 support to help people achieve their goals and challenge themselves to live the life they choose. Sophia worked closely with people with learning disabilities, complex health needs and challenging behaviours to help them live happy, rewarding lives.

As time went on the demand for the service increased and Sophia’s husband Ian joined the team. Ian had previous experience supporting vulnerable adults experiencing homelessness and addiction, ultimately managing a drug and alcohol detox unit. Ian has very much enjoyed the change and the challenge, and has quickly and effectively built strong therapeutic relationships with people needing support. He has also put his skills as a singer-songwriter to good use, and loves intensive interaction and interacting through music. Sophia and Ian formed the company Care with Heart in November 2018.
