💙 Bowel Cancer Screening 💙

Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, but it is often treatable—especially when caught early. It develops in the large bowel (colon and re**um), and early detection can make a big difference.

🔎 Know the symptoms:
✔️ Changes in your bowel habits (looser poo, constipation, or going more often)
✔️ Blood in your poo
✔️ Persistent tummy pain, discomfort, or bloating
✔️ Unexplained weight loss
✔️ Ongoing tiredness with no clear cause

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer, but it’s important to get checked if they last for 3 weeks or more.

📩 If you notice any of these signs, please contact the surgery for advice. Screening is also available and can help detect problems early—even before symptoms appear.

Looking after your health starts with awareness. Don’t ignore the signs.

Dear Patients,

I wanted to take the opportunity to answer some of the questions being raised about the newish triage system that was implemented last November. The practice took the decision to alter our appointment system for 2 main reasons. Firstly, in response to the likely GP contract changes that came into place this April and secondly due to repeated patient complaints around our telephone access. The new contract places several demands on General Practice around access being equal for telephone, virtual and walk-ins as well as demanding same day urgent access and continuity of care being prioritised. In order to balance all of these demands the practice has implemented total triage. This means that all GP appointments are triaged by senior GPs who are felt to be best placed to balance all the conflicting requirements. Currently we are meeting the target of seeing 90% of patients that we deem to need an urgent appointment on the day and seeing our routine appointments within 2 weeks (other than those who are requesting to see a specific GP and are happy to wait longer to see them). On some days we have over 400 appointment requests so you can see the scale of what we are achieving. By asking patients who are able to use the online forms we are also freeing up our reception staff to be able to support those who are unable to use an online form and we have noticed a significant reduction in the number of complaints around telephone waiting times.
From what we can gather the concerns raised about this process centre around the following:-

1. This unfairly disadvantages the elderly and those who cannot use an online form. This is UNTRUE as our reception staff are happy to help fill this form in either in person or over the telephone. They will offer to talk people through the process, and some people have been grateful for this and are now successfully using the forms themselves. We also run regular IT drop in sessions to help support people with use of the NHS app and online forms with the next one being on Friday 17th April 2026 at Huthwaite, further dates will be announced over the coming weeks. We monitor the number of patients not being able to fill the forms in online and their age ranges. We can see a large number of elderly patients are actually quite happy to fill the forms in.

2. Reception staff are taking details from elderly patients in front of others which breaches their privacy. UNTRUE— all patients can be taken to a private area if needed to fill a form in. Taking details over the desk is no different to what happened previously when a patient walked in asking to see a GP as they would always have been asked why they needed it.

3. Forms are triaged by reception staff. UNTRUE – the only people who triage the forms are senior GPs who will be responsible for triage for a day at a time. This means that they are able to review the clinical need for the appointment. This has actually meant that some appointments have been redirected away from a GP as others are best placed to deal with the issue. For example, patients wanting to chase medications will be diverted to the practice pharmacists, patients wanting to discuss referral pathways will be redirected to our secretarial team etc.

The most important thing for us a practice is to try and get back into being able to offer better continuity of care. Due to triage, we are better able to try and get patients to see the right GP to offer this. I am more than happy to meet with patients via our patient participation group to answer any further questions and would also request patients who have had specific problems to raise them with our Practice Manager Liz Griffin. If there are specific incidents that have occurred, we are able to review phone calls and notes to try and unpick things. Sometimes this will raise training issues for our staff which we are always happy to address.

Best wishes
Dr Lucy Genillard
