↩️ The patient entrance to the Adult Emergency Department (A&E) at Royal Derby Hospital is moving this weekend, alongside other urgent and emergency care services at the hospital.

🏥 This will allow us to expand the space we have available to care for our emergency patients throughout winter. If you are coming to Royal Derby Hospital for any of the following departments, we have shared helpful information on our website on how to find them:

• Adult Emergency Department (A&E)
• Medical Same Day Emergency Care (mSDEC)

🚨 Surgery Update - 18:30 26/11/2025 🚨

We would like to thank all patients for their forbearance and understanding today following the break in at the surgery and their assistance in spreading the word about the situation.

We are pleased to report that the surgery will be fully operational as normal from tomorrow.

We have also confirmed with the management team at Brennans Pharmacy (who are an independent business separate to the surgery) that they too will be open as normal from tomorrow.

We have been able to see a limited number of patients this afternoon in limited clinic space whilst the police completed their examination of the premises and security firms completed remedial works on the damage that occurred to ensure the safety of the building.

We’d like to thank our colleagues at the other surgeries for their assistance during the day and our own staff for their adaptability and professionalism in working through unexpected and challenging circumstances today.

Surgery Break In

Unfortunately the surgery was broken in to in the early hours of this morning with the intruders gaining access via one of our nurses consulting rooms.

We have the police on site and are waiting the arrival of Scene Of Crime Officers to conduct forensic examinations. Unfortunately this means the whole surgery is currently classed as a crime scene and as such our staff cannot enter the premises to conduct normal business.

We therefore will not be able to offer any appointments certainly this morning and potentially this afternoon.

We are awaiting the advice of the Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board as to how best to proceed and our staff are using the IT Infrastructure within some of our neighbouring surgeries to contact patients to inform of this.

However we would be grateful if you could spread the word as we are conscious many of our patients may not have access to special media.

We would like to thank our patients for their support at this sad time for the surgery.

Important Update: Changes to Some Services We Provide

At Swadlincote Surgery, our priority is always to provide safe, high-quality care to all our patients. To do this, we must focus our time and resources on the services we are funded and contracted to deliver.

Following national guidance from the British Medical Association (BMA), and due to increasing pressure on general practice, we will no longer be able to provide a number of unfunded services from 10th February 2026.

These include:

• ABPI/Doppler tests for compression hosiery measurement or repeat prescribing

• Long-term monitoring of patients with:

- Coeliac disease

• Monitoring of patients with eating disorders while awaiting or under specialist care

We understand this may be concerning, but these services are not part of our core NHS contract and have not been commissioned or funded for delivery in general practice.

Continuing to provide them without support puts significant strain on our team and risks impacting the care we are contracted to provide for all patients.

We are giving the Derby & Derbyshire Integrated Care Board(DDICB) three months’ notice so they can make arrangements to commission these services either from general practice or elsewhere in the health system.

✅ Why this matters for your care:

By focusing on our core responsibilities, we can ensure that we are available when you need us most — for urgent issues, long-term condition management, and essential health services.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to keep general practice safe, sustainable, and focused on what matters most: your health.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the practice team.

Due to unplanned sickness absence amongst our staff members today we will not be able to offer as many “on the day” appointments as we would usually aspire to.

Our reception team will signpost patients to other partners in the health and care system including community pharmacy, urgent treatment centres and 111 where appropriate.

Thank you for your understanding.
