"Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be very scary and settings can feel very clinical, so having somewhere friendly and welcoming where you can get advice (and a cup of tea) in a confidential setting is invaluable. We are very grateful to the team there." Lyndsey and Geoff, Macmillan Information Centre service users

Cancer patients and their families have commended the Macmillan Information Centre at Royal Derby Hospital after an independent review of the centre found it 'exceeded the level' to retain a quality award, called the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM).

The MQEM is a national benchmark for physical spaces and how well they are designed, managed and used to meet the needs of people impacted by cancer. The centre was last awarded the mark in 2022 and were able to retain the award in the recent review in July 2025 by making further improvements to the centre in addition to acting on feedback from the assessment in 2022.

The assessment praised the centre for:

β€’ Enhancing the experience, comfort, privacy and dignity of service users
β€’ Improving accessibility
β€’ General facility upgrades

Lead Nurse for Macmillan Information Centre, Mandy-Jayne 'MJ' Gray, commented, ''Retaining this mark from the last review in 2022 is a testament to the hard work, time and effort that the team and our volunteers have invested to create a welcoming and supportive environment for users."

πŸͺ©GP marks "Silver Jubilee" at Practice πŸͺ©

Today marks an amazing 25 years since Dr Ken Patton joined Swadlincote Surgery as a GP Partner.

During his time at the surgery, not only has he helped tens of thousands of patients, he has also played a crucial role in training other doctors as General Practitioners in his role as an approved GP Trainer for the Derby General Practice Speciality Training Scheme.

As Senior Partner, Dr Patton takes on countless responsibilities, many of which go unnoticed by our patients but are crucial to the smooth and effective running of the surgery and for that we are all grateful.

During his time at the surgery he has seen our building, workforce and patient numbers expand considerably and we remain blessed to have such an excellent GP, colleague and friend working with us .

Congratulations Ken from the whole Team at Swadlincote Surgery!

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION for women using weight loss or diabetes medicines such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, or Wegovy

The MHRA has updated its guidance on "skinny jabs". Here's what you need to know:

🚫 These medicines must not be used during pregnancy, when trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding.
πŸ’Š If you're taking Mounjaro and are overweight, oral contraceptives may be less effective. You should also use another form of contraception, like the implant, coil, or condoms.
πŸ›‘ Never buy these medicines from social media, beauty salons, or any other unregulated sources.
πŸ“’ Report any side effects or fake products via the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme.

Dr Alison Cave, our Chief Safety Officer said:

β€œSkinny jabs are medicines licensed to treat specific medical conditions and should not be used as aesthetic or cosmetic treatments. They are not a quick fix to lose weight and have not been assessed to be safe when used in this way.”

β€œOur guidance offers patients a β€œone stop shop” for our up-to-date advice on how to use these powerful medicines safely.”
