***HELP PLEASE***

Yesterday, 7th October, at around 12.55pm, one of our riders was taking an urgent sample from Derby to Sheffield, when, just before junction 29 of the M1, the Chesterfield turn off, a large length of timber fell from a flat back lorry. He was unable to avoid it and as a result both front and rear cast alloy wheels were damaged beyond repair. Despite a rapid deflation of the front tyre, he managed to stay upright and get off the live lane.

This could have resulted in the loss of life and thankfully we only have a substantial repair bill, thanks to an inconsiderate lorry driver, sadly unknown, as yet!

So our plea! Did you witness this? Do you have any dash cam footage to identify the vehicle?

Please help us track down this errant driver!

The September stats are in and checked and it’s again been a significant month, having gone through the 6,000th mission for 2025.

Some of the challenges during September largely related to requests outstripping the availability of volunteers, but our Controllers, riders and drivers skilfully negotiated the demands and completed 98.1% of all requests from our NHS.

Well what a weekend!

We’ve been out and about at Ockbrook Cricket Club and Ascot Drive Fire Station this weekend, getting our message out and raising funds.

We’ve also had some of our team at the BBC Derby Make a Difference Awards, where our Ops Manager Mark has been nominated as a finalist. Andy Statham, Mike Grimmet, Andy Pearson and Graham Worley have represented DBB at the Pride Park event.

We’re delighted to announce that Mark was the winner in the Volunteer category. We know Mark would simply say he’s just one of a great team!

A few days ago our Chairman, Mike Grimmett and Fleet Manager, Graham Worley, were guests at Mark Masons' Hall in London to celebrate another wonderful donation to UK Blood Biker Groups, over half a million pounds worth of bikes and cars to support our work, serving the NHS.

Derbyshire Blood Bikes have been generously supported over many years by Freemasons to the tune of three bikes and two cars, the latest being our Kia Sportage, presented to local Mark Masons at the Provincial HQ.

Nice to see Mike and Graham smartly representing Derbyshire Blood Bikes rather than in their ‘work clothes’.

Our volunteer Paul had a busy evening on the road and at the end of his shift yesterday, even spotted a moody photo opportunity as the bike was being put to bed in Chesterfield!

We have both a bike and a car at Chesterfield Hospital and we’d really like to be able to expand our service to the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS FT & Royal Primary Care but to do that we really need more local riders and drivers.

Slightly later than usual (while we verified some uncertain log entries) we can now share our August data with you.

If you follow our numbers you will see that we are down on mission numbers and very slightly lower mileage. One reason has been a welcome, successful calibration of new analytical machines within Derbyshire Pathology, and we no longer have to move bulk samples between sites twice each day. The other factor being a generally slower period during the summer holiday period.

Our NHS insiders have warned us to prepare for demands to increase into next month!! Bring it on! We have a new batch of volunteers joining the team in the coming weeks, all eager to support the NHS across Derbyshire.
