Over two thirds (68%) support the new, proposed Assisted Dying Bill

A study conducted by a UK provider of pre-paid funeral plans has revealed that 68% of respondents support the new, proposed Assisted Dying Bill. Some of the reasons for supporting the bill are to stop suffering and pain, and to die with dignity.

New research commissioned by Ecclesiastical Planning Services has revealed that out of 1,500 people surveyed, 68% support the new, proposed Assisted Dying Bill (1,020). Of the 68% who support the bill, 70% were female and 64% were male.

The study, conducted by pre-paid funeral plan provider – Ecclesiastical Planning Services, polled 1,500 British adults, all aged 50 or over. The survey was conducted as part of research into the attitudes of the British public towards death and how people feel about the proposed Bill. The Bill is intended to legalise assisted dying as a choice for terminally ill, mentally competent adults in their final months of life.

Initially, all participants were asked ‘To what extent do you support or oppose the new, proposed Assisted Dying Bill?’ 38% strongly support the bill, 30% somewhat support the bill, 10% are neutral, 9% strongly oppose, 6% somewhat oppose, 7% are not sure, and 1% would prefer not to say.

To understand respondents’ answers above, the survey then asked the same group of people what their reasons were for their support or opposition.

Some of the reasons for supporting the Bill were to stop suffering and pain, that we don’t allow pets to suffer in this way, and we should have the option to die with dignity. One person commented that they wouldn’t want to live if they had a terminal illness with no quality of life, and they wouldn’t want family or carers to look after them.

Some of the other reasons for opposing the Bill were that it could lead to abuse, it is against religious beliefs, and it could be misused.

The Bill, named; the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, if introduced, will have safeguards put in place to protect those who are over 18, terminally ill, and who wish to be given assistance to end their own life. Some of these safeguarding measures are:

• being a resident of England or Wales and registered with a GP for at least 12 months
• expected to die within six months
• having the mental capacity to make the choice, free from coercion or pressure (two independent doctors will complete an assessment)
• two separate declarations will need to be made by the individual, witnessed and signed
• a High Court Judge must hear from at least one of the independent doctors
• the form of death would be prescribed, self-administered life-ending drugs
• doctors would not be under any obligation to take part in the assisted dying process

Emma Simpson, Marketing Manager at Ecclesiastical Planning Services, said, “Regardless of opinions on this very important matter, similar to funeral pre-planning, we encourage having these difficult conversations in advance, so loved ones are aware of your individual preferences.”

Over 50s cite photographs, wedding rings and teddy bears as items they would most like to be buried or cremated with

In a survey carried out on behalf of pre-paid funeral plan provider, Ecclesiastical Planning Services, 1,000 people aged 50 and over were asked about their funeral arrangements and end of life wishes.

When asked which item, if any, they would like to be buried or cremated with, 150 survey participants provided a response.

Planning a funeral, either in advance through a pre-paid funeral plan, or on behalf of someone who has died, is an extremely personal thing, and it’s not uncommon to ask for a meaningful item to be placed inside the coffin with the deceased. There are some limitations however, and some items may need to be removed before a cremation or woodland burial especially. Your funeral director will be able to advise of this and potentially return any such items to you or your loved ones after the funeral ceremony has taken place.

According to this survey, 25% of over 50s would choose to be buried with photos of their pets or loved ones, making this the top choice. If considering this for your own or a loved one’s funeral, it’s a good idea to bury a copy of the photograph and keep the original, as family members may want this item later on.

In second place, chosen by 12% of respondents, was sentimental jewellery, including engagement and wedding rings. One respondent cleverly combined the top two answers by saying they would most like to be accompanied by ‘my pendant with my parents [sic] picture in it’.

Other popular answers included the ashes of a pet or loved one (11%), a teddy or childhood toy (8%) and sports mementos such as shirts, scarves and flags (7%). In addition to the items mentioned above, favourite books, letters and religious tokens are also common choices.

A survey conducted by OnePoll of 1,000 people aged 50 and over, shows that one in ten over 50s have either found themselves in financial difficulty due to the costs incurred by a funeral, or know someone else who has.

When someone dies, the cost of a funeral often falls to family and friends of the deceased, and this can be unexpected and unaffordable if there is no financial arrangement in place.

Due to the legal processes, the deceased’s funds are not always immediately available to those who are left to make the arrangements. Family and friends may therefore find themselves having to use their own savings to cover the costs. Alternatively, at what may be an extremely emotional time, they may have to turn to credit, loans or contributions.

The research on behalf of pre-paid funeral plan provider, Ecclesiastical Planning Services, further revealed that 15% of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis has reduced their ability to buy a pre-paid funeral plan to reduce the financial burden for loved ones, but over half said it has not affected their ability to buy one. 19% said they were not sure. Interestingly, those respondents that were 76 years old and over were less impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.

If you’ve ever had to arrange a funeral for someone, you’ll know just how much there is to decide and how difficult it can be. Add to this the financial impact, this can cause worry and anxiety.

Emma Simpson, Marketing Manager at pre-paid funeral plan provider Ecclesiastical Planning Services comments, “We recognise that everyone will have their own specific financial considerations but taking some time now, to provide financial and practical help for loved ones in the future, can be comforting and reassuring. Funeral pre-planning can help protect those who are left behind from footing the entire bill, and also reduce worry for family and loved ones by making funeral wishes known in advance.”
