A meltdown isn’t a child 'losing control' on purpose.
It’s the nervous system moving into overwhelm — often because things have felt too loud, too fast, too uncertain, or too much for too long.

When we understand the phases of a meltdown, we can respond with care rather than correction.
We can spot the early signs.
We can keep connection safe.
We can help a child return to calm without shame.

Today we’re exploring the Timeline of a Meltdown— what’s happening in the brain and body, what it looks like, and how we can support at each stage. Visuals for parents/educators and child voice style for young people. For more support, see our Timeline of a Meltdown Resource Pack – link in comments below ⬇️ or Linktree Shop in Bio.

📊 Did you know that 1 in 5 children show signs of neurodevelopmental differences that can impact how they express emotions, needs, and frustrations?

💬 Behind every behaviour is a story - your child may be communicating, not misbehaving. When we look beyond the surface, we can begin to understand what they’re really trying to tell us.

At Berkshire Psychology, we offer compassionate, expert assessments to help families better understand and support their children. 💙

📚 5 Signs of ADHD in Girls and Women You Might Not Know About

ADHD often presents differently in girls and women — making it harder to recognise and diagnose. Here are some key signs to watch for:

👉 Difficulty focusing, especially in quiet or structured settings
👉 Frequent daydreaming or ‘zoning out’
👉 Heightened emotional sensitivity and feeling easily overwhelmed
👉 Challenges with social interactions and making or keeping friendships
👉 Masking behaviours — trying hard to ‘fit in’ and hide symptoms

These signs can sometimes be overlooked or misunderstood, which is why early recognition is so important. If this sounds familiar, we’re here to help with expert assessments and support tailored just for you.

Big things are happening at Berkshire Psychology!

We are excited to be welcoming a new member of the team, an experienced paediatric clinical psychologist who has experience assessing much younger children. She will be working alongside our speech and language and occupational therapy colleagues to ensure our assessments continue to be tailored to each young person’s needs. She will be joining soon…watch this space!

We’re proud to continue growing and improving the support we offer to our clients.

We love to hear feedback from our clients, and it is particularly heart warming to hear from them a while after we have seen them to hear about the positive impact a diagnosis has made ♥️♥️♥️

“It is a while since we spoke to you about (child). However, we have followed your advice, he has some medicine from Doctor (name) and he is doing much better at school and in life. Your words have really helped us to help make him a much happier lad. Thank you! I am sure that we will have some struggles ahead, but things have materially improved.

I thought that it would be nice to let you know the positive effects!”

📰 National News: Rise in Autism Diagnoses – Not a Problem!

Recent data shows an increase in autism diagnoses across the UK — but experts agree this isn’t a cause for concern.

Instead, it reflects greater awareness, improved screening tools, and better access to diagnostic services. More people are finally getting the clarity and support they need.

At Berkshire Psychology, we’re proud to be part of this positive change, offering thorough, compassionate assessments that help individuals and families understand their unique neurodivergent profiles.

Knowledge is power - and early understanding opens the door to tailored support and better outcomes.
