Looking forward to speaking about maximising mobility and managing freezing at the Purbeck Parkinson’s Group - ‘Purbeck Parky’s’ meeting tomorrow.
It can be common in Parkinson’s to have reduced walking speed, stride length and arm swing and people can experience shuffling steps and freezing (when it is difficult to take the next step). I will be speaking about what causes this, strategies to manage it and exercises which can help reduce the issue. The brain pathways are changeable and exercise and movement is the key.

“I’m stronger and fitter than ever before and get positive mental health benefits from exercise.”

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”.

Dr Kimberly, 43, was diagnosed in 2021 with young onset Parkinson's. Every week she does some weight training, high intensity cardio and yoga. She has been able to manage her symptoms and mental wellbeing through exercise and regular movement.

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health symptoms that affect people with Parkinson's. Nearly half of all people with Parkinson's have experienced one of these issues.

Research has shown that regular, moderate to vigorous physical activity can help relieve some of the motor symptoms of Parkinson's, as well as improving overall mental and physical wellbeing.

Today, 11th April is World Parkinson’s Day.

PurbeckParkys have been busy raising awareness about the condition at the Coop in Swanage & Corfe Castle.

The Mowlem will be lit up blue tonight along with other landmarks and buildings around the world to show support and solidarity for people with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. It affects everyone in a different way due to the combination of symptoms that it may cause including; stiffness, slowness & difficulty moving, tremor, problems with sleep, writing & speech changes, constipation & problems with anxiety and mental health.

Medication can help improve symptoms by providing dopamine, the chemical neurotransmitter which is deficient in people with Parkinson’s.

Exercise and staying active is vital in helping to keep strong, flexible and maintain a good posture and movement. Exercise (in particular, intensive exercise) has also been found to stimulate nerve pathways in the brain which can improve symptoms and may even slow the progression of the condition.
