I had an interesting client this morning who is undergoing immunotherapy for their melanoma and came to me because their hearing in the left ear had greatly reduced, felt full, with the tinnitus increased.
I was worried that it may be a side effect of the immunotherapy where there is a rare risk of permenant hearing loss https://www.oncnursingnews.com/view/increasing-awareness-of-audiovestibular-adverse-events-from-immune-checkpoint-inhibitors
Upon observation I found the ear full of wax and when I removed the top wax plug revealed a suspected otitis externa (outer ear infection) for which I sent the client to the GP for diagnosis and treatment.
Even with the wax plug removed and wax/potential infected debris on the Tympanic Membrane (ear drum), their hearing was greatly improved but I still cautioned about the risk to hearing from the immunotherapy and to keep an eye out for it.

Oncology nurses play a critical role in identifying and managing rare audiovestibular complications associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors to prevent permanent hearing loss and improve patients' quality of life.
