Sancta Maria Hospital HMT Sancta Maria is a not-for-profit hospital located in Swansea, Wales.

We work with the UK’s leading consultants to provide a full range of healthcare services to private and NHS referral patients. As part of the healthcare charity, The Healthcare Management Trust, HMT Sancta Maria Hospital is a not-for-profit organisation. As such, we have no shareholders and our surpluses are used to support dementia charities, educational grants, and medical research around ageing. Our mission is to improve the health, wellbeing and independence of people in our care and quality and safety lie at the heart of everything we do. It is very important to us to be a part of the health community and work in conjunction with our NHS colleagues to provide the communities we serve with a high quality, modern healthcare services

Professor Whitaker, one of our consultant plastic surgeons, was featured in The Sunday Times this weekend for his humanitarian work alongside Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The visit, organised by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, shone a light on the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on women and girls.

Professor Whitaker, who is also Chair of Plastic Surgery at Swansea University, led the medical delegation as part of the SPARC (Swansea - Panzi Alliance for the Reconstruction & Care of victims of conflict-related sexual violence) project, which is spearheaded by the Duchess.

He operated alongside Dr Dennis Mukwege (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) and colleagues to perform life-changing reconstructive surgeries on children and women affected by the crisis.

We are proud to see his expertise and humanity making a difference to so many lives.

This World Patient Safety Day, we acknowledge that the global theme focuses on newborns and children. As we do not provide these services at Sancta Maria Hospital, we’ve chosen to highlight another important patient safety issue: tackling health inequalities.

This year, we’re shining a light on the gender pain gap; the unconscious medical bias where women’s pain is too often minimised or overlooked.

Led by Tracy Ace, Head of Clinical Services, and Sally Tucker, Senior Anaesthetic & Recovery Practitioner, our team is launching a review to better understand whether differences exist in how male and female patients’ pain is assessed, managed, and treated.

At Sancta Maria, addressing pain effectively is central to our mission of safe, compassionate, and patient-centred care. By listening to patients and proactively exploring this issue, we’re working to reduce inequalities, strengthen patient safety, and improve outcomes for all.
