Missing Teeth Can Affect Your Tongue and Denture

Did you know that missing teeth can change the way your tongue behaves? Normally, the tongue and teeth work together to move food around the mouth while you chew. But when teeth are missing, the tongue has to take on more of the workload, pushing food into position and compensating for the lost chewing surfaces.

Because the tongue is made up of muscles, this extra activity can make it feel bigger or more dominant in the mouth. In some people, it may even become more muscular and active, changing its natural posture. This can cause challenges when fitting a denture, as a more active or enlarged tongue may interfere with impressions and later compromise denture stability, making dentures feel less secure during eating or speaking.

Even if you already wear full dentures, you may experience a similar problem if you don’t consistently wear both your upper and lower sets when chewing. Relying on just one denture places extra strain on the tongue, something worth keeping in mind at meal times.

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a persistent and often frustrating condition that causes a burning or scalding sensation in the mouth. For many people, it feels like drinking hot tea that never cools down. While it can affect anyone, research has shown that it is more common in people who wear dentures, particularly those who are older or post-menopausal.

How Dentures Can Contribute to Burning Mouth Syndrome

Poorly fitting dentures are one of the most common denture-related causes of BMS. When dentures do not sit correctly, they can rub against the delicate tissues of the mouth, leading to irritation and inflammation. This constant irritation can trigger burning sensations, especially if the dentures are worn for long periods without giving the mouth time to rest.

Another common factor is an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the materials used in dentures, such as acrylic resin or certain metals. In these cases, the burning sensation may appear shortly after getting new dentures or after an adjustment to the existing set.

Oral thrush, a yeast infection caused by Candida overgrowth, is also more common in denture wearers and can produce burning sensations. If dentures are not cleaned thoroughly or are worn overnight, the warm and moist environment can encourage fungal growth, leading to discomfort.

Can You Microwave Your Dentures to Kill Bacteria?

If you’ve ever wondered whether your denture cleaning routine is doing enough to eliminate harmful bacteria, you’re not alone. One surprising suggestion that’s gained attention in recent years is microwaving your dentures to disinfect them. It may sound like something out of a science experiment, but researchers say it could actually work.

What the Research Says

A small study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, tested different ways of eliminating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from dentures. MRSA is a particularly dangerous type of bacteria known for being resistant to many antibiotics.

Researchers found that microwaving dentures for just three minutes was enough to kill harmful biofilm bacteria, including MRSA. These biofilms – thin layers of bacteria that cling to the denture surface, can be inhaled into the lungs and potentially lead to serious infections, especially in elderly or immunocompromised individuals.

In fact, according to a study published in the journal Gerodontology, denture biofilm has been linked to pneumonia and systemic infections in elderly people.

Denture Whitening & Care Tips

We were recently asked about denture whitening by a customer. It’s a great question as dentures can stain and discolour over time just like natural teeth, especially if you smoke or regularly drink tea, coffee, or red wine.

Here are some expert-approved tips to help keep your dentures looking their best:

- Use a proper denture brush. These are specially designed to clean dentures and partials effectively without damaging them.
- Invest in a sonic denture cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaners help remove buildup gently, avoiding surface scratches that can make your denture more prone to future staining.
- Use a concentrated denture cleaner like Val-Clean. It removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains and with regular use helps reduce dullness by removing bacteria that cause odour and discolouration.
- Use a specially formulated denture toothpaste like DENTU-Creme. It won’t whiten your denture like whitening products for natural teeth, but it can reduce surface stains and restore a brighter appearance with regular use. DENTU-Creme is meant to be used with a soft denture brush, ideally after soaking your dentures in a cleanser like Val-Clean.
- Have your dentures professionally cleaned. If your denture is already discoloured, a professional clean by a dental technician every 6-12 months is the best way to restore brightness.

Simple Tips & Solutions for Denture Gag Reflex

Wearing dentures should make life easier, not trigger discomfort. But for many people, a sensitive gag reflex makes denture use a challenge, especially when wearing upper dentures that cover the roof of the mouth.

But there are practical solutions to help you feel comfortable and confident with your dentures.

01. Start Small and Take Breaks
If your dentures are new, your mouth needs time to adjust. Try wearing them for shorter periods at first, maybe 15 to 30 minutes at a time, then gradually increase the time each day. Don’t push through discomfort – take breaks and try again later.

02. Use a Throat Spray
Buy an over-the-counter throat spray with a numbing effect (like those used for sore throats). A quick spray before inserting your denture can reduce the gag reflex just enough to make wearing it more comfortable.

03. Try a Pinch of Salt
It sounds odd, but placing a small pinch of salt on the tip of your tongue can help distract the nerves that trigger gagging. Let it dissolve naturally while inserting your denture.

Oil pulling 101

Have you ever heard of oil pulling and wondered if there’s any truth behind it? This ancient Ayurvedic practice has found its way into TikTok and Instagram, with claims that it whitens teeth, freshens breath, and even removes toxins from your body. But what does the science say?

- What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling involves swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut, sesame, or olive oil) in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes – ideally on an empty stomach. The goal is to pull bacteria, food particles, and other debris out from between your teeth and gums. After swishing, you spit out the oil, rinse with warm water, and brush as usual.

- What WebMD says about oil pulling
According to WebMD, one of the most trusted medical sources online, oil pulling may help reduce bacteria in the mouth – particularly Streptococcus mutans, a key player in plaque and cavities. Some small studies have suggested oil pulling might reduce plaque buildup, lessen gingivitis (gum inflammation) and improve bad breath.

But WebMD is clear that oil pulling should never replace brushing, flossing, or regular dental care. It can be a helpful addition, but not a substitute.

Meet the bacteria that could help prevent cavities naturally

We often think of bacteria as harmful, especially when it comes to oral health. But not all bacteria are bad and some actually help protect our teeth. In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers at the University of Florida identified a new strain of oral bacteria that may do just that.

- Not all bacteria are the enemy
Our mouths are home to hundreds of different types of bacteria. Some bacteria, like Streptococcus mutans, feed on sugar and produce acid that wears away our enamel causing cavities. Others help keep things in balance and prevent harmful bacteria from taking over. The discovered strain, called Streptococcus A12, might be one of the best bacteria for our mouths yet.

- What makes A12 special?
Researchers found that A12 can neutralise the acid in our mouth, helping to keep pH levels balanced. If your mouth becomes too acidic, that’s when decay starts to set in.

Even more impressive, A12 also seems to suppress the growth of bad bacteria, especially the cavity-causing kind. It’s like having a natural defence team working around the clock to protect your teeth.
