🌿 ADHD and the Hunter Brain 🌿

ADHD isn’t a “problem with attention.” People with ADHD are highly attentive — just in ways that don’t always match classrooms or offices.
Think back to hunter-gatherer tribes: hunters tracked prey across uneven terrain, scanning for rustles in the bushes, snapped sticks, and shifts in wind — all while keeping their goal in mind. Their quick thinking, curiosity, and ability to notice layers of information kept the tribe fed and safe.

ADHD brains today work in similar ways:
⚡ Broad, layered attention
⚡ Craving novelty and exploration
⚡ Hyperfocus on what matters
⚡ Quick thinking and bold moves
⚡ Needing rest to recharge

💡 Part 1 of my neurodiversity blog series, this post explores how viewing ADHD through the hunter lens helps us see these traits as adaptive, evolution-shaped strengths, rather than deficits.

ADHD is often described as a “problem with attention,” but that doesn’t capture the full picture. People with ADHD are highly attentive, just in ways that don’t always match classrooms or offices. One perspective I love is the Hunter vs Farmer theory. Imagine small tribal societies tens of th...

As a private CBT therapist and a BABCP accredited member, part of my commitment is to ongoing CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

Being accredited by the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) means meeting high professional standards and continuing to develop skills through regular training, supervision and learning.

This year my professional focus is on neurodiversity. Although I already have training, understanding and clinical experience in this area, I’m passionate about continuing to deepen my knowledge so I can support and empower my clients in the best possible way.

This week I attended a fantastic training session on empowerment, which was inspiring and really thought-provoking.

I’m also endlessly fascinated by the evolutionary side of psychology – *why* our brains work the way they do. For me, so much of this work is about understanding ourselves better. When we understand our minds and behaviours with more compassion and context, it becomes much easier to be kinder to ourselves.

This month’s blog (yes… I’ve fallen behind again!) focuses on ADHD and explores a theory I really enjoy. I’ll share more about that in another post soon.

This weeks debate on learning through play really stayed with me. Play isn’t “extra” - it’s how children learn about emotions, relationships and the world around them. Those early experiences matter for mental health far beyond early years. This is why protecting play matters so much.

As 2025 comes to an end, I’m taking a quiet moment to pause and reflect with a full heart.

This year, my work has brought me alongside so many individuals and families during meaningful moments in their lives. The trust that comes with that is something I hold with real care.

I’m incredibly grateful for the kindness and word-of-mouth support that continues to shape this small practice in such an organic way. It truly means a great deal to me.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this year. I’m moving into the year ahead with gratitude, hope, and a deep appreciation for the work I get to do.

Happy New Year all! X

UK Budget Day… A noticeable silence around mental health.

As a CBT therapist, I always pay close attention to how national decisions shape the support people can access. Today’s Budget included many important conversations about the NHS and public services — but mental health didn’t really feature.

For so many people I work with, timely and compassionate mental-health support is life-changing. It deserves to be part of the national conversation, not an afterthought.

Here in Wales, despite continued commitments to invest in health and social care, many people are still facing long waits and limited access to mental-health services. The need is real, and it’s growing

This isn’t about criticism — it’s about recognition. Mental health is healthcare. And when it’s overlooked, people feel it in very real ways.

I hope future budgets give mental health the space and priority it truly deserves. Our wellbeing, our relationships, our ability to cope, connect, and thrive… it all depends on it.
