The blood test service at Singleton Hospital is officially relocating into the main entrance of the hospital.

The new phlebotomy clinic can be found at the second door, formerly the admissions office, on the left of the Corridor 1, just past the volunteer reception desk.

The move is designed to enhance patient experience, streamline operations and enable people to have blood tests without having to go outside the main hospital building and negotiate a hill, exposed to the elements, to the right of the main building.

The new premises will be opening for appointments on Monday, 29th September, 2025, at 8am.

Phlebotomy manager, Adel Owen-Goddard, said: “We’d like to thank the public for patiently waiting for this move and we’d like to thank our estates colleagues for their help and support in making this happen.

“The decision to move was driven by several key factors and the main being accessibility challenges.

“The current location has posed difficulties for patients with mobility issues, has limited parking and outdated infrastructure.

“The new clinic will be situated in Corridor 1 which can be easily accessed from the main entrance.

“The benefits are easier access from the car park, outside disabled car parking and a bus route. The coffee shop is also nearby.

“All booked appointments will have no disruption; it will be business as usual.

“We are encouraging all our service users to attend for their appointment time because unlike the current accommodation there will be no waiting room available just a small sub-waiting area.

“The move is based on serving the public better and meeting the needs of many.

“Our valued volunteers will be on hand to help with any queries during the early weeks and our experienced teams will provide the best care.”

Joanne Phillips, Deputy Service Manager, add: “We are delighted to announce the successful relocation of the phlebotomy service at Singleton Hospital. This move has long been an ambition, aimed at improving accessibility for our patients by positioning the service closer to the main entrance and outpatient department.

“Feedback from patients and staff alike has consistently highlighted the need for a more accessible location, and we are pleased to have been able to respond to those concerns.

“We look forward to hearing further feedback now that the relocation has taken place, and hope this change will make a positive difference to everyone who uses the service.”

Did you know that you can get FREE medication for 26 common ailments at your local pharmacy?

The Common Ailments Service covers 26 everyday conditions and is available at all community pharmacies in Swansea Bay.

Pharmacists can offer free over-the-counter treatments for a number of ailments without the need to see a doctor first.

All you have to do is register with the pharmacy to be able to use the service, which only takes a few minutes.

Each community pharmacy has a private room where the consultations are held.
During the consultation, the pharmacist will discuss your symptoms with you and decide whether it would be best to offer advice only, treatment or refer you to a doctor.

There’s no need to make an appointment beforehand, you can visit your local pharmacy to discuss their availability on the day. You may be asked to call back at a more appropriate time or directed to a neighbouring pharmacy.

The 26 ailments covered are: acne, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, diarrhoea, dry eyes, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, hay fever, head lice, indigestion, in-growing toenails, ringworm, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, scabies, sore throat/tonsillitis, teething, threadworms, vaginal thrush, and verruca.

You can find more information about the Common Ailments Service on our website: https://sbuhb.nhs.wales/community-primary-care/primary-care/pharmacists/

We are aware of a report on WalesOnline with a number of inaccuracies and would like to provide some reassurance to our patients.

We are proud to be able to offer free onsite parking to our patients and the introduction of carpark management has increased the availability of free spaces for our patients.

Please be assured that if you visit the surgery and enter your car registration into the screen next to reception, you will not receive a parking fine, regardless of how long your appointment takes.

We can confirm that no-one who has entered their details into the parking registration screen, has been issued with a parking fine due to their appointment overrunning.

The article also reported that you need to enter your car registration when ‘only calling to collect a prescription’. Please be assured that there has always been a 15-minute grace period agreed with the parking firm to enable patients short visits for things such as collecting prescriptions.

Finally it was also reported that anyone without a smart phone would have to pay a small charge. This is not true, patients do not need a smart phone to use the car park, you simply add your registration to the screen next to the reception desk and our reception staff will be happy to help if needed.

To improve availability of parking spaces for patients visiting The Grove Medical Centre, the car park is now managed by a 3rd party.

If you park in The Grove car park, you will now need to enter your vehicle registration details into the tablet to the right of the patient check-in screen at each visit (even if you call to collect a prescription). This will give you 2 hours free parking whilst at the surgery.

Failure to enter your registration details will result in a parking fine.

Helpful information from Dr Graham Brown, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control for Public Health Wales.

“While we understand that parents are likely to be worried by reports they are seeing related to iGAS, the condition remains rare.

“Cold and flu like symptoms are very common at this time of year, especially in children. Most will have a common seasonal virus, which can be treated by keeping the child hydrated, and with paracetamol.

“The best thing that parents can do is to provide the care they would usually provide for a child with cold and flu like symptoms, but to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of scarlet fever and iGAS as a precaution."

Symptoms of scarlet fever include:
Sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting.
This is followed by a fine red rash, which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body.
Older children may not have the rash.
On more darkly pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like 'sandpaper'.
The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth.

Symptoms of iGAS:
Fever (a high temperature above 38°C)
Severe muscle aches
Localised muscle tenderness
Redness at the site of a wound.

Full statement below

Public Health Wales is reminding parents that cases of invasive group A streptococcal infection (iGAS) remain rare in Wales, and that children have a very low risk of contracting the disease.

Changes effective from Monday 24th October

We have listened to your feedback and with the relaxation of covid regulations we will be moving back to a more traditional model of general practice.

All patients presenting with a new problem, appropriate for GP assessment, will be offered a face to face appointment without the need for a GP to triage the appointment first.
Our care navigators in reception will still signpost patients to alternative healthcare services such as pharmacy, physio or optician, if more appropriate. This is essential to ensure the GPs have time to see the patients that really need their attention.

We would still like patients to use askmyGP to contact us and patients will then be called back by reception staff to be booked a face to face appointment.

Telephone and e-consulting will still be available for follow up appointments or simple queries.

We understand that no system suits everybody but strongly believe that easy access to see a GP in person, when it is appropriate to do so, is essential in providing the highest level of care to our population.
