In 2018 Julia and I came for our second trip to Sarajevo. We’re here again with Margaret and a fantastic woman called Sandy. Today we are back at the Women Victims of War centre, treating women who are still struggling with the aftermath of that terrible war, siege and occupation in the 90’s.
EDIT- treated both these women today- they provided coffee, juice, fruit, smiles and much gratitude 💚

On the wall is a photo of two men, in their 50’s, they are chatting and the one closest to the camera has a look of Father Ted about him, the other one is smiling as if they are sharing a joke.
But these are not hapless Irish clerics in a comedy show, they are two of the worst war criminals Europe has known, they are Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić and they are on the walls of the room we treat people in at the Women Victims of War offices in Sarajevo.
Mladić had been a professional soldier all his life but Karadžić was a psychiatrist, a lover of literature and poetry and yet he was the architect of the genocide and bloodshed that tore this region apart in the 1990’s.
The women who come here all have stories, some we hear or read, others will have a short note in their records that simply say “concentration camp 4 months” or “husband killed in war”. We can assume that they’ve been r***d as this was a usual tool of terror and control used in those dark days.
So our job is to try and quiet the demons that these women carry with them, to treat their bad backs, their headaches and their scars. Two war criminals look down from the walls but they are behind bars now having been convicted at The Hague. The women here are still imprisoned by grief and pain which will never go.
Instead of the two men mentioned in this I am posting a picture of two of the beautiful women who work at the centre Amela and Meliha who always greet us with smiles and gratitude, and this week, pie for lunch!
