“I didn’t feel the diagnosis was right but didn’t feel empowered to question this.”
The diagnosis of personality disorder can hide people’s experiences, and the distress that they are responding to. We’ve gathered people’s stories of receiving this diagnosis so that the truth behind the label can be heard.
Last year, homelessness in Wales reached record numbers, so more people needed the support of housing and homelessness services. Like Keith*, who was in temporary accommodation and facing mental health struggles when he was referred to us.
We helped him find somewhere more stable to live, to maintain a tenancy, and to start building a life connected to his new community. And we were on hand for mental health support every step of the way too.
The Housing Support Grant makes the work of our teams possible – and it needs to be protected and uplifted in line with inflation and the Real Living Wage.
If your life has been affected by these issues, or supported by these services, consider contacting your Senedd representative and asking them to prioritise the Housing Support Grant. You can find out how to do that, and read more about the HSG, in the comments 👇

The Hangout is exactly what young people have been asking for, Sarah Murphy MS for Bridgend & Porthcawl, Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, has recently told the Children, Young People and Education Committee.
The project, which we run in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, is a great example of the ‘sanctuary’ model of open access mental-health support. We know that open-access support is a hugely important part of making sure people can find the help and connections that can prevent their mental health from worsening, and we have been very encouraged to see it form part of the Welsh Government’s strategy for mental health.
A big thank you to the Minister for visiting both our Hangout sites and taking the time to discuss the project with both our service staff and the young people who come to the space. It’s really positive to see Wales’ political leadership engaging so closely with community-focused approaches to mental health.

A huge thanks to the Restraint Reduction Network for inviting us to speak at their conference last week, and to Jess Matthews for joining us there to share her story.
The diagnosis of personality disorder can function as a form of restraint, limiting people’s power over their own lives, and preventing their experiences from being heard and understood. In this way, the diagnosis functions as a restrictive practice.
Last week’s strengths-based session explored what it really means to hold boundaries in a broken system and why they matter.
Sarah Brown, one of our clinical psychologists, reminded us that boundaries aren’t barriers. They’re part of the relationships we build. They protect the people we support, and they protect us as workers. And when systems are stretched, that’s when we most need our boundaries, but it’s also when they’re most likely to fray.
We reflected on how compassion and clarity need to sit alongside each other. As Sarah shared:
🔴 “A trauma-informed boundary is predictable, transparent and kind, even when it’s firm.”
🔴 “Real kindness is accountable and tells the truth respectfully.”
At the launch of the WAMH manifesto this week, we heard first-hand how open access mental health services, and the chance to feel truly heard, can make all the difference when someone is facing a mental health crisis.
The WAMH manifesto has been written by some key mental health partners in Wales, people who see, every day, the ways in which our mental health is affected by our circumstances, and our relationships to the people around us. They’ve also seen the healing that can be found within communities.
The Welsh Government’s mental health strategy points us in the direction of a positive mental health future in Wales, and brings a tangible sense of hope – but the next Welsh Gov. has to make sure it happens.
You can help: share the WAMH manifesto far and wide, and consider adding your support at the link in comments 👇
The WAMH partners are Adferiad, Mind Cymru, Beat, Mental Health Matters Wales, Mental Health Foundation, PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Su***de, Samaritans Cymru and Platfform.

Platfform will always be, unequivocally, a space that welcomes trans people, whether you're accessing support or joining our team as colleagues and volunteers.
Community is a mental health intervention – and that starts with a sense of belonging, and being welcomed for who you are by the people around you.
This week - and beyond - we celebrate all the ways there are to be human, and the importance of being seen, understood, and loved.

“Volunteering as a Trustee at Platfform is one of the most fulfilling things I do.
It is an absolute honour to work alongside our brilliant team of staff to support communities and influence policy change.
Platfform has grown from strength to strength and positively affects the lives of thousands of people every year.”

Debbie Green is a long serving trustee at Platfform although she says it doesn’t feel that long, because Platfform is an organisation that is continuously wanting to do new things. This week she has reflected on what she enjoys about her role:
“I feel lucky to be involved with Platfform as a trustee. Platfform is an ambitious and forwards thinking organisation focused on achieving system change in relation to mental health and wellbeing.
I enjoy the bravery, creativity and the energy of the organisation, and the opportunity to get to know and support a fantastic group of trustees and staff.
Platfform is on a journey, growing and evolving over the years, it is exciting to be along for the ride and I have learnt a lot along the way.”
Thank you for generously sharing your time and expertise to support our journey ❤️

Platfform is the mental health and social change charity.
We are a platform for connection, transformation and social change.
We have operated in Wales as Gofal for 30 years, as of 24 of July 2019 we are Platfform.
We work with people who are experiencing challenges with their mental health, and with communities who want to create a greater sense of connection, ownership and wellbeing in the places that they live.
We do not believe that people or communities are “broken” or in need of fixing. We are driven by the fundamental belief that a strengths-based approach is the foundation to sustainable wellbeing for everyone.
We take a trauma informed approach to understanding mental health and emotional distress and see the mental health, and wider health, social care and public sector systems, as no longer ‘fit for purpose’. Based on illness and/or deficit models, they deny people the hope and agency to heal.
We are part of a growing social movement working towards a fundamental shift in the way that public services are provided, so that they support people towards sustainable wellbeing and the life of their choice.
