πŸ’ͺπŸΎπŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ Let's talk about musclesπŸ‡πŸ’ͺ🏾

The 8th part of our muscle feature is going to discuss an important muscle complex that helps to provide support to the thorax and forelimbs

⭐️ Today's muscles are the Pectoral Muscles ⭐️

The pectoral muscle complex is composed of 4 muscles often referred to as the Superficial and Deep Pectorals or Descending and Ascending pectorals alongside the transverse pectorals and subclavian which we have already discussed in part 7.

The pectorals provide stability to the trunk and the forelimbs and help to suspend the trunk between the forelimbs.
The pectoral muscle additionally form part of the thoracic sling complex which we will discuss in the coming weeks.

The Descending Pectoral originate from the sternum and manubrium and inserts into the deltoid tuberosity and crest of the humerus (inside of the humerus/ upper part of the forelimb).
This part of the muscle complex adducts and retracts the forelimbs.

The Ascending Pectoral also originates from the sternum and inserts into the upper part of the forelimb at crest of the greater tubercle.
This part of the muscle complex draws the forelimb backwards and internally rotates the limb. The Ascending pectoral can also draw the trunk laterally (to the side)

The Transverse pectoral originates from the costal cartilage and sternum and inserts into the fascia of the humerus. The transverse pectoral adducts the limbs and provides stability when the limb is planted to resist adduction.

When horses or dogs become sore through their pectorals they can be reactive when having their girth or harness fitted.
E.g girthy horses. Therefore, it is important that if your horse is reactive when the girth is being fitted that you discuss this with your Sadler and local Veterinary Physiotherapists.
