Bonny shares what led her to yoga...
I was on the brink, the brink of a major operation & changes (a hysterectomy if you must know), so not just physically but mentally too.
I knew I had to prepare and luckily I had a few months to put things into action. I knew I wouldn’t be able to go straight back down the gym like I had been doing, so what could do that was going to be a bit easier and more gentle? Yoga!
Yoga? What where all the bendy people hang out? Hang on maybe this wasn’t for me after all. What if I can’t do it? What if everyone is better than me?
I had to bite the bullet and go for it. It will be ok, I’ll go once and if it’s too scary I won’t go back, and no one will ever know!
So, I booked onto the yoga class at the gym and tentatively went along to my first class. I remember stepping inside, this is what was going through my head (take a deep breath)
* ‘oh, no the teacher is really skinny’
* ‘everyone is chatting to her, they all know each other and I don’t know anyone’
* ‘where shall I go? Upfront? Too close……..at the back? I won’t see what’s going on………oh no there is only one space left…….in the middle……now everyone is going to be looking at me’
* ‘note to self……try every pose…..don’t let on you don’t know what you are doing’
* ‘panic!’
I didn’t need to worry the teacher was amazing, she showed us how to do the poses depending on ability. She reminded us to focus on our own practice and not worry about what everyone else was doing.
That was it, I was hooked! I had such an amazing experience and started my journey to practice yoga every day.
After I recovered from my operation I was able to continue to use yoga to strengthen my body AND my mind and finally took the leap to become a yoga teacher.
I wanted to share this amazing experience with others, including everyone that was scared about not being bendy or flexible enough. To share the amazing way in which it supported my mental health and wellbeing, not just the physical benefits.
