Wu wei 無爲

An ancient Taoist philosophy meaning ‘non-doing’ is all about just ✨ letting things happen ✨

It’s the art of not trying to force things or change the direction of the natural flow of life (the Tao).

This can feel really hard when we feel we need to control everything around us to feel safe.

But fighting against the flow is like swimming upstream against the water current.

You’ll feel exhausted pretty quick and you won’t make the progress you were hoping for.

Allowing a situation to play out as it is supposed to can be the hardest challenge of them all. Things can change in an instant and your best well laid plans can go out the window in a blink — which almost always feels scary and unsafe.

Like life, water in a river that flows effortlessly, traversing the twists and turns of the river banks. Sometimes the water moves slowly, sometimes it will gush rapidly and crash down a waterfall.

Accepting and allowing yourself to be taken by the flow of life is actually more effortless.

Perhaps counterintuitively, letting go of trying to be in control actually reduces anxiety and stress.

So lay back and enjoy the ride 🌊💚

3 WAYS TO SET UP YOUR COMFIEST ŚAVĀSANA 3️⃣👆🏻

1️⃣ Get COSY! Put on your cosiest jumper, trackies, socks, pjs, hoodie, hat, whatever it is that makes you feel warm and cosy.

2️⃣ Grab your PROPS! Cushions, pillows, bolsters, bricks, whatever it is that is going to support you to feel as comfortable as possible lying down. You might want to lie flat on the floor or lift your upper body up slightly like I have in the video. Your śavāsana, your choice!

3️⃣ ENJOY! Cover yourself with your warmest blanket and get comfy. Close your eyes, maybe even add an eye pillow or eye mask, shut off the lights, play some music, light a candle. Get the ambience right 👌🏻 then drift off into a dreamy relaxed state and let the mind soften and quieten on its own.

Give it a go and let me know how you get on!

YOGA POSES - GUIDES NOT GOALS? 🤔

In my own yoga practice and in my teaching I use yoga āsana as a guide rather than goal.

For me, they're not something that needs to be achieved or perfected.

Yoga poses/postures initially were documented to enable one to sit in meditation for long hours. They were postures that were crafted and demonstrated usually by men who were thin and (probably) with hyper mobile bodies.

If you've not figured it out already yet, I am not a male and I am not hyper mobile. So why should I look to these intensive postures, not be able to warp my body into them and then feel a failure?

Some days, I feel really energised and spacious in my body. I breathe deeply and move smoothly, lightly and feel balanced. Other days, I feel stiff, wobbly, heavy and lethargic.

I could do the same yoga flow on both days and have completely different experiences on the mat.

I used to dance a lot. You got praise for touching your toes, having long legs and bending your body into shapes that looked 'good'. Similarly, I've been to yoga classes where the teacher has stopped the class and made everyone look at the most flexible student doing the 'most advanced version' of a pose.

For me, yoga āsana is about strengthening the connection my brain and my body - which often get disconnected when I sit down still all day and only use my brain for work. They are shapes which provide a vehicle of exploration and expression.

Sometimes the exploration is - how focused can my awareness of my body and balance be so I can come into a headstand?

Sometimes the exploration is - how can I move in a way that calms me after a hard day and helps me sleep better?

Yoga isn't a performance. It is not a test.

Postures are directions, not destinations.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments 👇

MOVEMENT BREAK 💚

I spend 5 days a week mostly sat at a desk looking at a screen so little movement breaks are the best way to get some movement back into the body especially my upper back which suffers most.

It’s also a great way to have a break between tasks especially when I’m feeling low in inspiration/motivation.
