Merry Christmas Eve!!
It was a busy week for me inside and outside of the clinic finishing clinic on Tuesday and then 3 days on my theatre shows in Manchester in prep for the Xmas theatre season.

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who has walked through the doors of my clinic this year. I am so thrilled to be able to help so many people within my clinic and have loved seeing returning patients and meeting lots of new patients this year.

I wish you all the best Holiday season and see you all in January. Clinic doors will reopen on the 8th of January and the online booking system is all updated for that accordingly.

Sorry everyone I missed yesterdays 12 Days of tips so you’ve got an extra long one today!!

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦!

Your thoughts, emotions and reactions will all contribute to your breathing pattern🧠

Psychological and emotional load will at times have an affect on respiratory regulation. This includes your respiratory drive, breathing pattern and how the body responds to change. Improving your breathing patterns will help with better movement, sleep and mindset and this is done through pain science.

Rapid and shallow breathing will lead to an contraction increase in your thoracic dominant muscles and this can be due to stress. You may see this when hyperventilating or in a chronic state of fight or flight😤

I get a funny look from patients when I ask them do you breathe through your mouth or nose and they do have to think about it.

So I ask:

✴️How many of you at times struggle with your breathing?
✴️Is your breathing easy, is it effortless?
✴️Are you getting a nice controlled movement of your ribcage when breathing or does it feel restrictive?
✴️Have you considered focusing on nasal breathing?
✴️Do you complete regular breathing exercises?

It is important to understand how you breathe. Many people overlook the importance of breathing in day to day life.

Another top tip: keep it SLOW, CONTROLLED and QUIET. When doing nasal breathing we want the diaphragm and pelvic floor to go through its full range of motion, we want good and efficient ribcage movement and no quick upper chest or shoulder movement. Find a position which works for you and breathe👃

Day 2- 12 Days of Christmas Tips🎅

Do you know your Mobility from your Flexibility? Did you know there is a difference and it is key to know to be a better mover!

Flexibility is defined as “the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to lengthen passively through a range of motion”.

Mobility is defined as the “ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion”. Mobility also takes into account the component of motor control within the nervous system. Therefore mobility is really effective because it is addressing your movement and control.

Our bodies need to be strong, stable and mobile in order to gain more range of movement. As we know motion is lotion.

How often would you say you work on your mobility? Or are you spending your time more focussed on flexibility?

So move regularly, look at your fundamentals of control, balance, motor skills, stability and strength in order to make mobility gains.

Remember mobility is ability of a joint to move actively through a range of motion, so start this Christmas working on testing that range of motion💪

Thought I would do something fun to start off December. So here it is the 12 Days of Christmas Tips… 1st December Hydration is Key!

Do any of you struggle with your hydration in the winter months? Do we rush to the hot chocolates and hot sweet drinks to keep us warm. Do you think about being dehydrated in the Winter.

Optimal hydration is 200ml per 5kg of body mass. Also hydration doesn’t mean just water. Hydration can include your juices, squash, teas, fruits and vegetables, milk, sugar free drinks.

You can find fluid in many different ways, think of how many fruits and veg are water-rich e.g watermelon, cucumber, pineapples, lettuce and many more.

We don’t want to feel stiff and tired in our bodies this winter so keep your body hydrated with movement and your fluid intake🥤❄️

Therapy Expo 2023 complete✅

For those who don’t know the therapy expo is a medical conference I go to every year where I get to listen to some of the new research topics, updated literature, current concepts on a range of topics within our industry. I got to listen to 9 talks on day 1 and 11 on day two by some of the best practitioners in the field.

I went to a range of talks covering: gut health, pelvic health in female athletes, behavioural changes, biomechanics of the spine on gait, bad back treatment, training our brains and not just treating the injury, IT band syndrome, back pain and lifting, recovery, Red-S, tendon treatment techniques and many more.

It’s great every year to go and learn a range of new things which will continue to support the work I do with my patients and future patients to ensure I am providing the best care, supported by research and progressions within our profession and medical world.

I can’t wait to share some elements of these talks with you all soon💚

Important announcement

Due to increase rent prices, my current clinic room will no longer be in use by the company I currently rent my room from.

Due to this I will be moving into a room in the same building down the corridor in Unit 10 Basepoint Business Centre.

All appointments from the 28th of November will be from Unit 10 now instead of Unit 8!

The past 2.5 years have been amazing so far with clinic but for now I won’t be moving far just down the corridor! I will be taking bookings up until Christmas!

Absolute pleasure to support and help on the My Name’5 Doddie Edinburgh to Paris Cycle and Walk Challenge in support of MND for the yesterday afternoon and evening. A fantastic afternoon organising and helping and then proving treatment to a number of participants including and Jimmy Nesbitt.

An absolute honour to support such an amazing cause to raise awareness, support and funds for the foundation. Let’s keep working hard to try and find a cure for Motor Neuron Disease.
