First Light Stands with Harriet as She Shares Her Story

This includes references to child sexual abuse and may be difficult for some readers.

First Light stands in full support of Harriet, who has shared her story and encouraged others affected by sexual abuse to seek help.

In January, Wi******er Crown Court convicted her sister of inciting a child family member to engage in sexual activity after Harriet detailed years of abuse she experienced as a young teenager. The judge issued a 15 month suspended sentence and placed the offender on the S*x Offenders Register for ten years.

Harriet, who was just 13 when the abuse began, spoke powerfully in court about the long term impact of the trauma she endured and her determination to reclaim her future. Addressing her abuser directly, she said:

“This is no longer mine to carry.
This is your shame now.
This is your guilt now.

You must sit with what you did to your baby sister. I will leave here and rebuild my life. I will heal, and I will keep going for myself and for my son.

You, however, will live with this for the rest of your life. And the world will know the truth.”

First Light supported Harriet throughout her journey, along with Horizon Victim Support.

Rach Barr, First Light Independent S*xual Violence Advisor (ISVA) Service Manager, said:

“Harriet’s story is an important reminder that an abuser can be anyone, including people who are meant to protect us, people we trust and people we love.

Harriet’s bravery in sharing her experience, and her powerful words, remind us that we may not always recognise abuse when it is happening, or we may be carrying the impact of abuse and not know where to turn.

We want you to know that you are not alone. Support is available, and you will be believed and supported.”

Harriet also shared that reporting the abuse marked a turning point in her life, giving her the strength and safety to begin healing after years of trauma.

She said:
“I want to give hope to others who have suffered similar abuse that you will be believed and listened to, and supported.

You are not alone.”

Harm doesn’t disappear just because it happens behind a screen.

Whether it’s threats, stalking, harassment, or controlling behaviour, digital abuse has real‑world impact.

So what is harassment and stalking?

Harassment and stalking can be scary, confusing, and difficult to talk about. Both behaviours can leave someone feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, or watched.

What matters most is how the person on the receiving end feels, not the intention behind the behaviour.

If something feels too much, too intense, or too intrusive, it’s important to take it seriously.

You deserve to feel safe, respected, and in control.

Online dating can be exciting, empowering, and full of potential, but it can also open the door to harmful behaviours and hidden motives.

Whether you’re new to dating apps or a seasoned swiper, being aware of common red flags can help you stay safe, confident, and in control.

Here are 𝟕 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 to watch for:

🚩 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐧
Love bombing, instant “you’re the one” messages, or pressure to commit right away.
🚩 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭-𝐔𝐩𝐬
Endless excuses, broken cameras, or last-minute cancellations.
🚩 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬
Guilt-tripping, requests for personal info, or pressure to send photos you’re not comfortable with.
🚩 𝐀𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
Brand-new profiles, overly professional photos, or no trace of them anywhere else.
🚩 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐞
Irritation, pressure, or guilt when you want to slow things down.
🚩 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬
A major violation of consent and a serious sign of disrespect.
🚩 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬… 𝐎𝐟𝐟
Your intuition is powerful. If something doesn’t sit right, trust it.

𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥, 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥.
If someone can’t offer that from the start, they shouldn’t have a place in your life moving forward.

👇 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐬?
Or do you think we’ve missed an important red flag?

Throughout S*xual Abuse & S*xual Violence Awareness Week, First Light will be focusing on online dating, digital relationships, and the importance of safety, respect, and confidence in every interaction.

As part of our Happy Healthy Love campaign, we’re inviting anyone who has used a dating app to take part in a short, anonymous survey. This forms part of our research and plays a key role in our wider work on online digital abuse.

Our survey explores experiences such as unsolicited or unwanted messages and images, as well as how safe people feel when using online dating platforms. The findings will help us shape new campaigns around online dating and digital abuse.

S*xual Abuse & S*xual Violence Awareness Week starts today, and this year we’re focusing on online dating, digital relationships, and helping young people stay safe, confident and informed.

We’re launching new resources, interactive surveys, and social content, all designed to support healthier online interactions and make sure young people know what safe, respectful relationships look like.

We’re doing this because online dating is now a normal part of growing up, but it comes with real pressures and risks. By understanding young people’s experiences, we can create better tools, better support, and safer spaces.

First Light - Domestic Abuse and S*xual Violence Support for all

The Swindon and Wiltshire S*xual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is a specialist centre for anyone aged 16 and above who has been sexually assaulted. The service is provided by First Light in partnership with G4S. We believe that the only person to blame for a sexual assault is the person who committed the crime. We offer trauma informed crisis support, access to medication and a welfare check, sexual health advice, and the option to have DNA evidence retained if you or someone you know is considering reporting to police. We offer time, a listening ear and an honest conversation to figure out what support is best for you. Coming to the SARC means putting you back in control, and empowering you to know that you can thrive again.
