I have randomly been speaking to some of you recently about how another muscle had been found within the quads, and today, this memory came up on my personal profile so I thought I’d share it for you all to read ☺️.

Introducing a `new` muscle... Tensor Vastus Intermedius!

The Tensor Vastus Intermedius is a new muscle `discovered` by Grob et al. (2016):

"The quadriceps femoris is traditionally described as a muscle group composed of the re**us femoris and the three vasti. However, clinical experience and investigations of anatomical specimens are not consistent with the textbook description. We have found a second tensor-like muscle between the vastus lateralis (VL) and the vastus intermedius (VI), hereafter named the tensor VI (TVI). The aim of this study was to clarify whether this intervening muscle was a variation of the VL or the VI, or a separate head of the extensor apparatus."

"Twenty-six cadaveric lower limbs were investigated. The architecture of the quadriceps femoris was examined with special attention to innervation and vascularization patterns. All muscle components were traced from origin to insertion and their affiliations were determined. A TVI was found in all dissections. It was supplied by independent muscular and vascular branches of the femoral nerve and lateral circumflex femoral artery. Further distally, the TVI combined with an aponeurosis merging separately into the quadriceps tendon and inserting on the medial aspect of the patella. Four morphological types of TVI were distinguished: Independent-type (11/26), VI-type (6/26), VL-type (5/26), and Common-type (4/26)."

"This study demonstrated that the quadriceps femoris is architecturally different from previous descriptions: there is an additional muscle belly between the VI and VL, which cannot be clearly assigned to the former or the latter. Distal exposure shows that this muscle belly becomes its own aponeurosis, which continues distally as part of the quadriceps tendon"

The image to the right side is from Grob et al. (2016). You can see what we as professionals thought the quadriceps looked like to the left side vs the quadriceps with the new TVI muscle included - highlighted in red. For reference, the inside of your knee is close to 6, and the outside of your hip is close to 4. (1- TVI 2- VL 3- VI 4- TFL 5- RF 6- VM)

What are the Implications?
----------------------------------
Implications for therapists will likely be minimal due to the relative size of the muscle. However, future research will clarify any links to specific functions or pathology.

This new discovery serves as a reminder that our knowledge of the human form and function is constantly evolving.

As some of you know, I have been doing an online training course for Indian head massage, where I needed several case studies in order to complete this.

I would firstly like to say thank you to all my case studies who took the time to allow me to practice on them and to everyone else who has supported me through this. Well today, I received the email I was hoping to get.

I have now officially passed and completed my Indian head massage course and I can’t wait to add it to my list of treatments.

If you are an existing client of mine, then you are more than welcome to book in advance of my price list change as this will be not available until April 1st.

The cost for the Indian head massage will be £40 for 40 minutes ☺️.

So excited to share this news with you 🙌🙌
