Although we are quiet on Facebook, we are still working hard behind the scenes to support Great Western Hospital in their COVID-19 response!

Today was a fantastic day for our team. We were honoured to receive the Trust STAR of the month award. In Pre COVID times we would have pulled our team together as a whole and shared the award with them, but our team are working across many different areas within the Trust and this just isn’t possible at the moment. So we presented the award to our team who now run the COVID swabbing unit which is located in our Brunel Treatment Centre car park. They kindly accepted the award on behalf of the whole Shalbourne team.

This award celebrates everything Shalbourne stand for and we are so proud of their hard work and commitment. They have supported many different areas of the Trust over the last 12 months from the COVID Assessment Unit to Cashiers! Each and every one of them is coming to work and making a difference each day.

A huge thank you to each and every one of you!

We want to remind people that we still have restrictions for visitors during this time. In particular, we are not allowing visitors in the Emergency Department to reduce crowding and maintain social distancing.

We know this can be difficult for families and friends who have loved ones in the Emergency Department, but we must do all we can to protect our vulnerable patients and staff.

There may be exceptions for some patients, so if you are ever in doubt, kindly ask a member of staff for advice and guidance.

Please also be reminded that there are no circumstances in which abuse of NHS staff will be tolerated and that appropriate action will always be taken.

Thank you for your support.

Swindon is currently one of eight areas on the Government’s ‘areas of concern’ watchlist, so it is important that we all do everything we can to slow the spread of infection, prevent a community spread of COVID-19 and stop the prospect of local lockdown measures.

There are also things you must do when visiting the hospital, or one of our GP practices.

You should:
- Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds
- Cover your face in enclosed public spaces, on public transport and when you visiting the hospital or one of our GP practices
- Follow social distancing guidelines
- Only enter and exit the hospital through designated patient-only entrances – the main Atrium and west entrance near Boots Pharmacy.

If you are feeling unwell, you should get a test and do not leave home for at least 10 days. Those living in your household should self-isolate for 14 days if you or any members of the household receive a positive test.

To get a local test in Swindon or at your home, visit: https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

"In people who suffer gut symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation or bloating, life becomes tricky and unpredictable and it’s easy to stop doing things you previously enjoyed because you feel uncomfortable or want to keep close to the toilet. It’s not uncommon for people to have developed compensatory behaviours to help them manage these unpleasant symptoms, such as avoiding eating out, restricting their diet or fluids, eating only once a day, or avoiding using the toilet at work or in public places. These things might help in the short term but develop into their own issues over time. I regularly see people who feel at their wits end trying to figure out what to eat or avoid, when to eat and how to get their life back on track. It can be exhausting dealing with this on your own." During the pandemic, we extended the opening hours for the Urgent Care Centre at the Great Western Hospital to provide 24 hour urgent health care. However, the hours will revert back to normal from Monday 20 July – opening from from 7am until 10.30pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year (including weekends and bank holidays).

If you or your loved ones are in need of urgent health care, you can walk-in without an appointment.

The Urgent Care Centre works together with the Emergency Department as one big team and we move patients between the two based on their treatment needs. This is the best way for us to provide your treatment as safely and quickly as possible.

If the Urgent Care Centre is closed or you’re not sure what to do, please call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. If someone is seriously ill or injured, or you think their life may be at risk, call 999 or visit the Emergency Department at the Great Western Hospital.

Please never hesitate to seek help. Our doors are open to anyone who feels they or their loved ones are in need of urgent or emergency care.

As part of the hospital's work to manage the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, we made the decision to close the Shalbourne Private Healthcare department.

However, some consultants are now offering telephone and video consultations for private patients. Details can be found on the individual consultant pages of our website if they are able to offer virtual appointments and who to contact for bookings. https://www.theshalbourne.co.uk/treatments/overview/

(Please note, there will be some occasions when a virtual appointment will not be suitable.)

This week one of the Shalbourne Team had some questions to put to Vani Sesetty, our Clinical Specialist in Women’s Health Physiotherapy & Wellbeing.

‘What does our pelvic floor do? And do we only need to pay any attention to it around childbirth?’

If you’d like to keep up to date with this series of women’s health awareness videos, please subscribe to our YouTube channel. We are aiming to increase awareness of specific women’s health issues that often don’t get discussed and get left untreated until they become more serious.

Where is your pelvic floor? And what does it do exactly? Here's what you need to know.

From tomorrow, we will be introducing a one way system at the main entrance to maintain social distancing and reduce crowding.

If you are coming to hospital, please follow the signs on our doors, as you enter and exit the building. The central glass doors will be used for entrance only, whilst the disabled access door next to the restaurant will be used for exit only.

If you are getting drinks or food from Costa, follow the floor stickers and queue towards the disabled access door. Please do not queue in the main atrium.

As part of the national research effort against coronavirus, we supporting a programme to collect convalescent blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19.

There is some evidence globally that COVID-19 patients may benefit from being given convalescent plasma. However, the safety and effectiveness of convalescent plasma transfusions needs to be confirmed by robust clinical trials.

This plasma is planned for use in a number of national COVID-19 clinical trials, and if successful, it will be used across all hospitals as a treatment.

If you have recovered from confirmed COVID-19, or have had symptoms, and would like to donate plasma, please visit for https://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/covid-19-research/plasma-programme/ for more information.

In January this year Women’s Health Magazine reported that in a survey of 2833 women about ‘taboo topics’ - 66% responded that they experienced bladder leaks.

What percentage of those women know that it can be treated?

Did you know that it isn’t something you have to live with?

Isn’t it time we started talking about these health issues to help more women learn about preventative action that can improve their health and wellbeing?

As we are in a period of social distancing during the Coronavirus pandemic and cannot offer face to face events, we have decided to share a series of video health talks with Vani Sesetty, a clinical specialist in Women’s Health Physiotherapy and Wellbeing.

These informal discussions with other health professionals aim to raise awareness of the health issues that many women face but don’t get treated.

We hope you enjoy the first video and please do let us know if you want to know more on specific women’s health issues by commenting below.

Don’t suffer in silence.
