Boxing Day always reminds me of something that still stays with me.
Years ago, during the tsunami in Thailand

When I genuinely thought I was going to die.

After the initial surge of panic and anger —

Why did I go this way?

Why didn’t I turn back?
You idiot.

Something unexpected then happened.

I realised I had absolutely no control.

There was nothing I could do.

No decision left to make.

No action that would change the outcome.

And the moment I accepted that...

a strange calm came over me.

Looking back, maybe it was fight or flight.

Maybe it was shock.

But I think it was something simpler.

Acceptance.

Not giving up — just stopping the mental fight with reality.

Most of the stress and suffering I see in people now comes from the opposite of that: Trying to control everything. Trying to control outcomes.

Trying to control other people.
Expecting life to behave a certain way.
And when it doesn’t — we suffer.

You see it after someone passes away. “Life’s short.”
“Tomorrow isn’t promised.”

And for a while, people live differently…

Until slowly, they slip back into control, pressure, and noise.

This year has been challenging for me in ways I won’t label good or bad — because that’s just perception.

What I do know is that when I stopped stressing about what I couldn’t control,
and accepted the situation as it was,

My head cleared.

And that’s when you can actually do something useful:

Focus on what is in your control.
Your actions. Your responses. Your next small step.

I’m always aware that many people, some I knew, that day never got that opportunity.
( RIP 🙏 )

That stays with me.

But the lesson remains.

The more you try to control everything, the more you suffer.

Acceptance doesn’t make you weak. It makes you clear.

Stop the control. Stop the suffering.
