Today is the start of Baby Loss Awareness week 💗🩵 a time to raise awareness and remember all the much loved babies that are no longer with us

Baby Loss Awareness week encourages us to talk about those wonderful babies who are no longer here, say their name and remember them

This years theme is 'together we care' focussing on self care and supporting those affected by loss

The Lullaby Trust has a downloadable poster with lots of self care tips for support

The aim of Baby Loss Awareness Week is to raise awareness of pregnancy and baby loss and provide support to anyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby

🩷 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage
🩵 1 in 90 pregnancies are ectopic
🩷 1 in 100 women experience recurrent miscarriage
🩵 each day in 2023 in the UK around 400 babies were miscarried, 132 babies were born preterm, 7 babies were stillborn
🩷 in 2023 there were 1,766 neonatal deaths (under 28 days of age)
🩵 in 2023 there were 2,320 infant deaths (under one year) and 961 child deaths

Let’s help make sure that these babies and their families are not forgotten

We have linked some fabulous, supportive organisations within our post please reach out for support or pass the details on to someone who needs them

🍭Lollipops 🍭

Do you know the risk with lollipops? ⚠️

Packs of multiple lollipops will have a clear warning:

“Not suitable for under 36 months” but this can be missed on single lollipops ⛔️

Why are they dangerous?

Some lollipops will come off the stick easier than others and can then easily be sucked into the airway 🫁

Our advice is to stay clear of these suckers for as long as you possibly can! The advice is over 3 years old

Be ready for those times that your little one may be offered a lollipop from another adult!

For example, at the end of a meal at a restaurant, after a hair cut, in a party bag or Halloween 🎃

Have a safer option at the ready in your bag if possible 👜

Most importantly make sure you know how to perform the choking sequence, and CPR, which we teach in all our classes 🚑⛑🚨

Head to our website for free downloadable posters of the choking sequence

Children under 5 account for half of all meningitis deaths

Meningitis is swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, caused by germs, these germs can also cause septicaemia (sepsis) which is blood poisoning

Both of these diseases are life threatening so quick recognition and treatment is vital

Symptoms of meningitis are very easily confused with other illnesses so can be very hard to recognise but here are some of the specific symptoms:

💜Fever and/or vomiting
💜Severe headache
💜Limb / joint / muscle pain
💜Cold hands and feet
💜Stiff neck
💜Dislike of bright lights
💜Very sleepy or floppy
💜Confusion
💜Seizures
💜Bulging soft spot on infants head
💜Rash anywhere on the body that does not fade when pressed with a glass – DO NOT wait for this as it is usually one of the later signs

🚨If you suspect your child has meningitis you must go immediately to your closest Urgent and Emergency care centre and tell them you suspect meningitis 🚨

Bacterial meningitis requires fast hospital admission and treatment with antibiotics, viral meningitis will usually get better on its own with 7-10 days

We've been at Baby Sensory Rotherham this morning and had an unexpectedly small class due to winter bugs 🤧🤒 so I decided to go old school back to how we used to all sit close together for a class when there was just a few of us and it was lovely, so lovely that I ran over time because we chatted so much 😊

Thank you to everyone who joined us as always ❤️ 💙

today is all about sling safety

Slings or baby carriers are a perfect way to have your baby close whilst keeping hands free. Baby wearing helps develop bonding and attachment and has lots of benefits for baby and caregiver

Although there is no reliable evidence that slings are associated with SIDS there are things we can do to keep babies safer – accidents involving slings are usually to do with suffocation – so anything we can do to keep our babies airway unobstructed makes their use safer

Sometimes their airway gets obstructed by their chin, due to not having sufficient head control, and slipping to their chest or by the adults clothing or the sling fabric covering their nose or mouth

The safest baby carriers are ones where the baby is in a solid, upright position and the adult can see their face clearly and check their airway

You can use TICKS to remember safety points
Tight
In view at all times
Close enough to kiss
Keep chin off chest
Supported back

We have attached pictures to highlight TICKS, you may recognise wonderful Karen from Baby Sensory Pontefract , you can see that in the blue carrier Navy is tight in an upright position with her back supported. In the pink carrier she has her chin off her chest and is in the perfect position for a kiss

There are lots of different styles of slings and carriers to choose from so do your research. Check your local area for sling libraries as this is a great way to try different slings and find which type works best for you. If you recommend any local sling libraries please tag them in the comments to help others looking for support

Today marks the start of Anaphylaxis Awareness Week

Anaphylaxis UK started over 30 years ago and their main objective is to prevent death by food-induced anaphylaxis

Continuing on with last years theme of they are trying to tackle the emotional challenges of living with serious allergies

Having access to correct information and support helps with this

Living with allergies or caring for someone who lives with allergies can have a huge impact on emotional wellbeing. This is in addition to the worry of going out to eat, sending your child to school or other peoples homes, going on holiday, things that most of us take for granted every day

So not just today, but always, let us not only support parents of children with allergies but go the extra mile and check on their wellbeing, check if they need a chat or a cuppa because they might really need it

We have included some advice on symptoms of Allergies and Anaphylaxis in the pictures – if you suspect Anaphylaxis you must dial 999 and get immediate medical attention

Today is World Heart Day

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases affecting the heart or blood vessels including heart attack, angina, stroke, heart failure - it is one of the main causes of death and disability in the UK

There are several risk factors for CVD which include:
🖤High Blood Pressure
💙Smoking – give your local Stop Smoking service a visit
💜High Cholesterol – try to eat a healthy, balanced diet
💛Diabetes
❤Inactivity – aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week
💚Being overweight or obese – eating a healthier diet and becoming more active can help
🧡Family History
💗Ethnic Background (South Asian, Black African or African-Caribbean have increased risk)

80% of premature deaths from CVD are preventable! Some of these risk factors are out of our control but we can definitely improve on others by making small lifestyle changes

Every year in the UK there are around 100,000 hospital admissions due to heart attacks and someone will die of CVD every 3 minutes 💔

Every year there are almost 35,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK (over 70% are at home) and the survival rate from this is only 1 in 10 – you can help improve this!!!! The more people who know how to do CPR and are aware of the importance of early access to a defribrillator the greater that number will be

So today on World Heart Day book yourself on a course to learn this vital, life saving skill for yourself, your family and the person in the street whose chance of survival could be more than doubled if they get quick access to CPR and a defib ⚡🚨
