Just over a year on, our planting team has returned to Stroud Green in Newbury to replant 70 Lombardy poplars bringing back the beauty, heritage and greener future this much loved avenue represents.
Local authority members joined us for the ceremonial planting of the first tree, marking the next stage of the project. After removing 56 declining poplars in November 2024 and completing ground preparation in spring 2025, this winter’s planting brings the full cycle of work from felling to replanting to completion.
Originally planted in the early 1970s, the avenue had reached the end of its natural life. Assessments highlighted safety concerns, and following strong community support for replanting the same species, the Council committed to restoring Stroud Green’s distinctive character.
This project reflects our shared focus on safety, heritage and community. The new Lombardy poplars will protect the classic landscape while enhancing biodiversity and air quality for the future.
Attending the planting were: Richard Compton (Foremost Tree Surgeons), Cllr Billy Drummond, Cllr Phil Barnett and Jon Gurr (West Berkshire Council).
