Hawthorn blossoms in Highfield country park are outstanding. Really added fragrance, beauty and an abundance of bird songs to our weekly walk. Wonderful little gem of an area you would never know you were on the age of a city.

For Day Two of our spotlight on MBC data, we are looking at some of the insights published by NAoME’s State of the Nation report in the autumn.

There is a patient version of the report https://buff.ly/4hYOTmn which is aimed to be used by patients. We are breaking down some of the content this week to help understand what data is and isn’t available so far into the audit.

The report produces a graphic to show what data was used in the report; 65% of the patient data population are de novo (straight to stage 4) and 35% of the patient data population recurrent MBC. NAoMe acknowledge that this is NOT correct. We know from other estimates and from the data matched to those who have died of MBC that this figure is not correct and there is a far greater proportion of recurrent MBC patients.

It also means that the diagnosis data/infographic is also INCORRECT. METUPUK have concerns about publishing charts/graphs that could be taken at face value without understanding how much data is missing. Should information that is not complete be published? Are the caveats clear enough to understand?

What we do know is that it feels lightyears away from being able to live well and long with the best outcomes when we don’t even know how many of us there are, let alone what type of MBC and interventions those who are longer term success stories have had.
