Have you ever seen a funeral procession and noticed someone walking in front of the hearse? Have you ever wondered who that person is or what they’re doing?

That individual is the Funeral Director, and the act of walking ahead of the hearse is known as paging.

Paging involves walking slowly and ceremonially in front of the hearse, and it serves several important purposes:
• Clearing the route: By paging, the Funeral Director signals to other road users that a funeral cortege is approaching, encouraging them to slow down, stop, or give way.
• Guiding the procession: Paging helps direct the cortege, especially in areas where roads are narrow or the route is complex. It ensures the hearse driver receives clear, visible guidance.
• Showing respect: Paging is a symbolic gesture that honors the deceased. It adds dignity to the occasion and marks the solemnity of the final journey.

Paging usually takes place at key points: when the cortege departs the funeral home, arrives at and leaves a family residence, and upon arrival at the service venue.

As the hearse draws level with the Funeral Director, they—along with other staff, chapel attendants, celebrants, or ministers—will pause and bow as a final sign of respect to the deceased.
