Are you a man in your 30s or 40s and thinking about a career change? Or are you a younger man thinking of a career in mental health? This is something to seriously consider.
Only about 20% of therapists and psychologists are male, and the same is true for teachers, meaning boys often grow up without male role models in the very spaces meant to support their development. 75% of men in prison are from fatherless homes.
At the same time, evidence clearly shows that a strong therapeutic alliance, the relationship, trust, and sense of being understood between client and therapist, is one of the most important factors in positive outcomes.
For many boys and young men, having the option to build that alliance with a male therapist matters. Right now, that option is limited.
This isn’t about being better than anyone else. It’s about representation, relatability, and role modeling healthy masculinity in spaces where vulnerability and growth happen.
If you’ve lived some life, done your own work, and want a career that’s meaningful and impactful, the therapy world needs you. Especially our boys.
