Can you help? We need recipient mares.

At Twemlows we provide various embryo transfer services. This means a “surrogate” mare carries the foal of another mare, who may still be competing or unable to breed herself. To do this, we need surrogate, or recipient mares, and you might be able to help.

We need mares that are:
• 16.1hh or over
• Between 4-9 years old (or older if she has had a foal before)
• Warmblood/Sports horse type (not full TB)
• Paddock sound
• No vices, sarcoids or sweet itch
• Barefoot

Do you have a mare who can come and join our happy herd of recipient mares?

To find out more, or to see if your mare might be a great fit for us, please email chrystal.shaikh@twemlows.co.uk

Recent research by Vet Compass and the The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) showed correlation between human heat warning and heat stroke cases. Heatwave peak set to bring 34C to parts of UK. The UK Health Security Agency has issued heat health alerts are across England.

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if safe immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Happy World Veterinary Day 🌍

Quite often when you see me i’m on my own working away on your animals, but part of this years world veterinary day is to raise awareness that we all work as part of a team.

Referral and communication with your vet and vet nurses, hydrotherapist, farrier, saddle fitter, nutritionist and any other allied professionals is all part of my job. But not forgetting the receptionists, cleaners, grooms and all those who work away in the background.

But importantly you, as the owner, also play a huge part in the team, particularly when it comes to rehabilitation. Ensuring your exercise prescription gets carried out between sessions and informing myself and your vet of progress and any concerns helps to form part of your animals recovery.

So, here’s to all of those within the Veterinary Profession and our fury friends caring owners 🫶🏽

Registration complete for another year with professional body 🐴🐶

All registration for animal therapists is voluntary seems there is no current single legislative body. Being registered ensures appropriate qualification, insurance, continued professional development and accountability 📑

Always choose a registered therapist to ensure your animals welfare ✅

** MATERNITY LEAVE **

I am now officially on maternity leave from both my teaching and Vet Physio work. Thank you to all my clients who have been patient with delayed appointments, rescheduling and slower response times over the past 7-8 months, it’s not been the smoothest! 🤢🤰🏼😅

Some of you may notice my sign disappear from the little blue shop where I have my canine clinic, don’t worry, I’m looking at potentially relocating or switching back to mobile post maternity, I’m not going for good!

I’ll miss my work over the next few weeks but I’m sure i’ll then have my hands full once the little one arrives 👩🏼‍🍼 and i’ll be back before I know it! There already seems to be a queue forming for baby cuddles 🤣 👶🏼

Please do feel free to pop me a message for any advice and I’ll reply if and when I can, or pass you onto a colleague who could help further. is very kindly taking on some of my clients whilst I’m away, though just returning from maternity leave herself, so you will be in very safe hands! 🫶🏽

See you all soon,

Nat 💙

Well a fab end to our Indoor Carriage Driving UK qualifying season. Lilly bringing home joint Novice Small Pony champion for Midland Indoor Horse Driving Trials in her 2nd season and less than 2 years after starting her driving career. Her best dressage so far on 11.5 brought her home her 3rd best dressage of the day for as a single and the 4th when you include the tandems win. Big thanks as always to Paul Smith Farriers for looking after her feet and Cheshire Veterinary Physiotherapy for keeping the rest of her in tip top condition!
