My children were born through two wonderful, physiological home births. I believe, that you too should have the opportunity to

naturally follow the rhythms of your body, mind and baby to consciously engage together so that your labour and birth outcome becomes your own positive experience. I believe we are all responsible for our own health and therefore our choices and decisions should be recognised and respected. I also offer Mother Blessings, Reiki and massage. I have some knowledge of aromatherapy and homeopathy as I used these successfully for my own pregnancy and birth. I have a birth pool and accessories available to hire. See my Services section for more details. Contact me for a free initial chat so we can see how we connect together and whether you would like to invite me to share your birth journey with you. It's that time again – the clocks go back, whilst many of the UK are looking forward to an extra hour in bed all the parents know that they're in for a tricky few days. Babies and kids don’t follow clocks!

For those with younger babies, stick with responsive feeding and let your little one’s cues guide you – no need to stress about the time. (Honestly, who really knows what time it is these days, anyway?)

For parents of older babies, if you want to gently shift their routine, try moving those nap and bedtime cues by 10-15 minutes each day over the course of a week. A gradual transition can help everyone ease into the new schedule with a little less fuss.

Here’s to cosy feeds, staying flexible, and ignoring the clock a bit longer. You’ve got this! 💪

☮️ Free your mind and your birth will follow ☮️

🕉️Just been chatting with a good friend about her recent first time birth and we were laughing about just how PSYCHEDELIC birth is!! It’s SO trippy!

🌈 So if you’re a first timer and you’re experienced in freeing your mind, it’s a brilliant and beautiful doorway in to understanding the birth space.

🪴 ‘Preparing’ requires similar things too-ensuring there’s absolute safety in the environment, choosing companions (if any) very wisely, making sure there’s plenty of hydration available, creating much beauty in the surroundings and bringing totems to honour and ground us into the space.

🛸 Then it’s about surrendering into and trusting that experience. Knowing you’ll be in and out of zones and will experience much that is new will help you to meet the intensity with curiosity and not with fear.

🆓 So if you can free your mind, then let go of what you’ve been told is expected of you, let go of what your family’s told you you’re capable or not capable of, resist what is considered the ‘norm’, open yourself up to the experience and your ideal birth will follow.

A few months ago, a birthing pool company put out a post claiming that there are conditions one needs to meet to be able to use a birthing pool.

These conditions included that one needed to be low risk, and within pre-pregnancy BMI criteria.

In case we’ve not met, hello. I’m not a rival birth pool company. I’m an author and researcher with thirty years of midwifery experience, and a PhD. I write about pregnancy, risk, high BMI and the importance of informed decision making.

And I wanted to reshare some information that I posted in order to set the record straight.

There are, in fact, only three conditions for being able to use a birthing pool.

1. You are birthing
2. You have access to a pool
3. You want to birth in the pool

Now, it’s true that access can sometimes be tricky.

If you decide to give birth in a facility such as a hospital or birth centre, for instance, there may not be a pool available for you to use.

That's one reason why some families hire, buy or borrow their own.

It’s also true that some facilities and care providers might try and restrict your use of a birth pool if you have risk factors, including higher BMI. (More on this in my book on Plus Size Pregnancy).

But these are not absolutes. There are plenty of exceptions.

We know many women who have used birth pools in hospitals and birth centres with a higher BMI and/or other supposed risk factors.

And no-one can stop you from doing what you want in your home.

These restrictive statements also aren’t evidence-based. More on this at www.sarawickham.com/water

And the bottom line is this: your body, your baby, your decision.

That’s why it’s good to do your research beforehand and ask lots of questions.

Please don’t let anyone else restrict your options. Not care providers, not your family, and certainly not birth pool companies.
