With the clocks going forward one hour, we wanted to look back at our first social cafe event which took place on Friday.

Bringing patients together, away from the busy clinical world of hospital life for a short time, makes a massive difference. They shared stories, laughed and joked all while increasing their food and fluid intake.

Creating a calm and comfortable environment mattered. Our amazing volunteer supported the cafe with beautiful calming music. She even received some requests by patients.

The next cafe will be held April 24th to mark the start of intergenerational week.

Had the pleasure of visiting the memory cafe in Bridgwater Hospital today. It was incredible, there were members of the public and patients joining together to complete activities and games galore. While the tea and coffee was flowing everyone was able to engage and chat in a relaxed and friendly environment. Well done to Hayley and the ladies for creating such a fantastic event.

As part of Dementia Action Week, we’re shining a light on Emily Hitchens, our education support worker in the dementia and delirium team⭐

Starting as a healthcare assistant on Wordsworth Ward, Emily now supports colleagues through hands-on, interactive dementia training - from turning delirium recognition into a crime scene-style investigation, to sparking connection through a fun "speed dating" game.

Her approach helps colleagues feel more confident, better connected, and more empowered to deliver outstanding care. And the impact on patients is real 💙 Like our patient who was a painter-decorator by trade and suffering from delirium while on the ICU - colleagues on the ward started to give the patient tangled up ECG wires, and the patient spent ages straightening them all out, rolling them up, and taping them together as he would have with tape wire before starting to paint, helping him to remain calm during his stay.

Emily brings warmth, creativity, and compassion to everything she does – living our values of kindness, respect, and teamwork every day for the care of our patients.

Yesterday we joined our activity facilitator to provide a festive bingo and bauble decorating afternoon. The bingo was lots of fun and one of our patients said at the end that she wants to do everything we have on offer everyday 😄 seeing patients engaged, happy and socialising is the best part of the job.
