đź’™ Blue Monday đź’™

Today is often described as the most difficult day of the year. At Somerset Counselling Centre, we gently remind ourselves that every day can still hold moments of care, steadiness and connection.

Here are a few small ways to look after yourself today.

Take a pause. Slow your breathing for a few moments and allow your body to settle.

Move gently. A short walk or some light movement can help lift your mood.

Eat with care. Choose something nourishing that helps you feel grounded.

Stay connected. Sharing how you are feeling with someone you trust can ease the weight.

Be kind to yourself. It is okay to feel low. Small steps still matter.

If today feels heavy or you are finding things hard to manage, you do not have to cope alone. Our counsellors are here to offer a calm, supportive space where you can talk openly and feel heard.

You are always welcome to reach out to our charity. Your wellbeing matters, and support is here when you need it.

Let today be a gentle step forward. đź’™

We've been honoured to be supported by Tesco shoppers throughout Taunton over the past 3 months, and thank you to everyone who has popped a blue charity token in our box in store. It really does mean a lot. There are only a few days left to continue voting for us. Here's a reminder of how:

• As you head out, please scoop up a blue charity token and drop it into our box at the exit. Every token is a tiny vote of confidence for the work we do.

• Tokens are available at every till, and if you’re using self-service, look for the box perched above the screen.

•There are three brilliant charities in the running, and all will receive a cash gift, yet the one with the most tokens will receive the largest share. If our work resonates with you, we’d love your support.

The stores are:

• Galmington Taunton Express, TA1 4TY
• Taunton Superstore, TA1 4AB
• Lisieux Way Express, TA1 2PD
• Rex Taunton Express, TA1 3ES
• Taunton High Street, TA1 3PN
• Priorswood Road Express, TA2 7PS

Thank you!

A huge shout-out to Robin, who is running the TCS London Marathon 2026 in support of our charity.

Robin has already been busy fundraising, with some brilliant family support behind him. His wife organised a bake sale at work, and together they raised an amazing ÂŁ250. A fantastic effort and a real reminder of how much these behind-the-scenes acts of support matter.

Thank you to everyone who baked, bought, donated and encouraged. It all makes a real difference.

We are wishing Robin and our other brilliant fundraiser runner Jess all the very best with their training and fundraising journeys. We are so grateful to have you both representing us. đź’™

As the new year begins, many of us feel the quiet pressure to make resolutions. Change your habits. Be better. Do more.

But are New Year’s resolutions actually good for our mental health?

For some people, setting intentions can bring clarity and motivation. It can offer a sense of direction and hope. For others, resolutions can feel heavy. When rooted in self-criticism or perfection, they may experience increased guilt, stress, or a sense of failure when life gets in the way.

Mental health does not always grow through big promises. Often it grows through gentler things. Noticing what you need right now. Letting yourself move at a human pace. Making space for rest as well as growth.

This year, it may help to ask a different question. Instead of “What should I change?” You might ask, “What would support me?”

That answer could look like boundaries, kindness towards yourself, asking for help or simply allowing things to be as they are for a while.

Whatever this season brings for you, you are not behind and you do not need to become someone else to be worthy of care.

Sometimes the most meaningful intention is to meet yourself with compassion, one day at a time.

Christmas Kindness: Start with Yourself

This time of year often comes with high expectations—perfect decorations, the best presents, magical moments for everyone. But let’s take a step back. Nothing has to be perfect.

Christmas is about connection, not perfection. It's okay if the tree leans a little, the wrapping paper isn’t Pinterest-worthy, or the dinner doesn’t rival a Michelin-starred meal. The most memorable moments often come from the unplanned chaos—spilling flour while baking cookies or mismatched stockings hung with love.

Be kind to yourself. Prioritise what really matters—family, joy, and some well-deserved rest. Give yourself the same grace and care you extend to others

This year, let your gift to yourself be acceptance. Relax, breathe, and let imperfection add to the season’s charm. If you feel that you need a little extra help, or someone to talk to, have a list of helplines for you on their website: https://bit.ly/SCCHelplinesList

As we approach Christmas, and the end of December, we say a heartfelt goodbye to Noelle, who is stepping down after six years as our Clinical Director and an extraordinary 35-year connection with Somerset Counselling Centre.

Noelle’s impact on SCC is woven into its very fabric. During her time, she has helped shape our clinical standards, expand our services to reach more clients, and ensured that the care we offer remains ethical, compassionate, and firmly rooted in best practice. Her leadership has been steady, thoughtful, and deeply values-led, particularly during times of change and growth for the centre and charity.

As Clinical Director, Noelle brought an unwavering commitment to clients and colleagues alike. Many counsellors, supervisors, and team members have benefitted from her guidance over the years, and her influence will continue to be felt long after her official role comes to an end.

We are incredibly grateful for everything Noelle has given to SCC, and while we will miss her enormously, we wish her every happiness in this next chapter. Thank you, Noelle, for your dedication, and your passion.

We told you recently that Jess, one of our two TCS London Marathon 2026 runners, was holding an auction of promises to raise even more funds for us.

A HUGE congratulations and thank you to Jess, who has not only raised over ÂŁ1,400 from her auction, but also is continuing to raise awareness of our charity in the community, which we are so grateful for.

Thank you also to everyone who donated and bid so generously. You are making a real difference. enabling us to help even more people in the community we serve.

Our second runner, Robin, has also been hard at work training and fundraising; we'll tell you more about that next week.

Last weekend was a busy and inspiring one for us. We attended The West Country Women Awards 2025, where our Monika was proudly recognised as a finalist. Although she didn’t take home the top prize, she is already a winner in our eyes for the incredible work she does for the centre and our charity.

On Saturday night, we were back out again, this time at The Stand Dinner, supporting another fantastic local charity, Learning. It was a privilege to hear more about the vital work they deliver within our community.

Thank you to everyone involved in both events for an uplifting and memorable weekend.

Greater Freedom

Counselling helps you explore the way you think and act; to see how you may be repeating unhelpful patterns of behaviour or thinking. It can also help you explore the way you deal with relationships and conflict.

You can bring thoughts and feelings, which you may not feel able to share with friends or family. You are free to talk safely, without fear of rejection, criticism or blame. Your counsellor will not tell you what to do but will help you to make your own choices and to make changes in your life that offer greater freedom in thought and action.

SCC counsellors come from a range of different trainings and incorporate a variety of counselling models including psychodynamic, person-centred, integrative and humanistic.

To give counselling the best chance of working the sessions need to be weekly. The counselling session lasts 50 minutes. Counselling can be time limited 6 – 12 sessions, or over a longer period of time depending on requirement, this will be discussed more fully at your initial consultation.
