When we avoid difficult truths or push down emotions, it’s not just ourselves we impact—it’s the people around us, too. Living in denial can be a quiet cruelty to others. The people in our lives often feel the effects of our unresolved emotions in the form of distance, unpredictability, and even hurtful behaviors we may not notice.

As Dr. Gabor Maté explains, “Unaddressed emotions don’t just disappear—they seep out, often affecting those we care about most.” When we stay in denial, we may unintentionally put up walls or create patterns that leave loved ones feeling shut out, confused, or even burdened by emotions they don’t understand.

đź’ˇ Exercise to Start Facing Reality:

1. Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths.
2. Ask yourself: Is there something I’m avoiding that might impact others?
3. Notice any feelings that arise and write down one truth you’re ready to acknowledge.

Yes, facing reality can be uncomfortable. But the pain of addressing our truth is far kinder to ourselves and others than the pain of avoiding it. When we live with honesty, we bring more compassion, clarity, and connection to the people we love.

🗨️ What’s one truth you’ve faced lately? Share below, or drop a “💪” if you’re ready to begin. Remember, the journey toward healing and deeper connection starts with a single step.

At Being in Psychotherapy, we believe trust in relationships is not just a static foundation but a dynamic journey that reveals our true selves. As Brené Brown wisely said, “Trust is built in very small moments.” This highlights how everyday interactions shape the trust we cultivate.

Trust often shows up in simple yet significant ways: sharing fears, expressing needs, or being vulnerable during tough times. For instance, when one partner faces anxiety, the other’s willingness to listen and support can create a vital bridge of trust. Similarly, how we communicate during disagreements can either strengthen or erode that trust. Approaching conflict with empathy fosters deeper connections.

To build trust, consider these practices:

1. Open Communication: Regularly check in with each other about feelings and concerns.
2. Active Listening: Make a conscious effort to hear not just the words, but the emotions behind them.
3. Transparency: Share your thoughts and intentions openly to avoid misunderstandings.
4. Consistency: Follow through on promises to demonstrate reliability.
5. Vulnerability: Take risks in sharing your true self, inviting your partner to do the same.

Ultimately, trusting one another means embracing vulnerability and exploring the unknown together. This journey not only enriches your connection but also allows both partners to grow, creating a relationship that is resilient and deeply fulfilling.

Existential psychotherapy teaches us that while we can’t control every situation, we can control our response and our choices. Often, we live in ways that are safe or familiar, even if they don’t make us feel alive or fulfilled. But the question at the heart of existential thinking is: Are we living in a way that aligns with our deepest values and sense of purpose?

Today, try this: Take a few moments to ask yourself, What small choice could I make today to live more authentically? It could be saying no to something that drains you, or yes to something that excites you. Life is short, and choosing courage over comfort can lead to profound changes, even if they start small. It’s about creating a life that feels more like your life.

Give yourself the chance to choose courage over comfort. Remember, it’s your story to write, one choice at a time, and every intentional step brings you closer to a life that feels authentically yours
