Emily Golding- Cook

Emily joined Kensey Care after an incredible 15 years working as a paramedic in London. She later moved to Launceston to care for her mum and decided to become part of the Kensey team because she wanted to build meaningful, long-term connections with the people she supports — rather than the one-off
encounters that came with emergency work.

In her spare time, Emily enjoys reading, arts and crafts, and spending quality time with her partner Gary and their five children — Lexie, Isla, Harvey, Kaitlyn, and
Georgia.

She has a real passion for learning and always strives to give her very best in everything she does.

Emily says one of the things she loves most about working for Kensey Care is being able to form genuine bonds and make a lasting difference in the lives of her clients.

Dale Smart

Dale has been a community carer for almost four years now and really enjoys the work — no two days are ever the same, and there’s always the chance to meet some interesting people along the way.
Work keeps Dale busy most of the time, but when there’s some downtime, Dale likes to relax by gaming or heading out for a day away from work.

A proud greyhound owner, Dale loves spending time with his four-legged friend. He’s also a big fan of travelling and makes the most of his holidays by exploring new places — especially when there’s good food involved! Being a bit of a foodie, Dale always looks forward to trying out the local cuisine wherever he goes.

In the past, Dale has been something of an adrenaline ju**ie — he’s even ticked off bungee jumping and skydiving — but these days, he’s quite content to keep his feet firmly on the ground.

With fireworks coming up this week supporting loved ones during fireworks can help create a calmer experience for those with dementia.

Prepare in Advance:
Let the person know that fireworks are likely to happen. Use simple, reassuring language and repeat information as needed.

Create a Calm Environment:
Close curtains and windows to reduce noise and flashes. Play soothing music or familiar TV shows to help mask the sound.

Stay Together:
Offer reassurance by staying close. Your presence can help reduce anxiety.

Use Comfort Items:
Have familiar objects, blankets, or favourite snacks nearby to provide comfort.

Avoid Surprises:
If possible, avoid taking the person outside during fireworks displays, as the unpredictability can be overwhelming.

Throughout each month we will be doing a "focus on staff" feature where you can learn a bit more about our team – we will start with the management team this month.

Gillian Holloway - Deputy Manager

Today we’re shining a well-deserved spotlight on Gillian Holloway, our dedicated Deputy Manager, who is celebrating an incredible 10 years with us.

Gill began her journey with Tavy Care a decade ago and quickly became a vital part of the team. When Kensey Care was established, Gill played an instrumental role in setting up and launching the new service—laying the foundations for the high standards and compassionate care we’re proud to offer today.

With over 20 years’ experience in the care industry, Gill began her career in childcare before transitioning into adult social care, where she found her true calling. Prior to joining Tavy Care, she worked for many years in a nursing home, gaining invaluable hands-on experience that continues to shape her leadership style.

Gill’s deep knowledge, calm professionalism, and unwavering commitment make her an essential part of the success at Kensey Care. Her ability to lead from the front, support both the staff and management teams, and consistently uphold the highest standards of care is what truly sets her apart.

Outside of work, Gill is a proud mum to three grown-up sons. Her dedication to care clearly runs in the family—her youngest son has recently followed in her footsteps, working in domiciliary care and making his own positive impact in the community. Gill has a houseful of pets, she currently has 3 dogs and 8 cats! When she’s not at work Gill spends a lot of time with her family and taking care of all
her animals!

We’re incredibly lucky to have someone as skilled, compassionate, and dependable as Gill on our team. Thank you, Gill, for your dedication and the incredible impact you’ve made over the years!

Dehydration is a common challenge for older people, especially those living with dementia. Here are some simple but effective ways of helping to prevent dehydration during hot weather:
1. Leave beakers or jugs of water within easy reach. This is especially important for people with limited mobility, who aren’t able to get up and make themselves a drink.
2. Make drinking easier. Have a clear beaker so the person can see what’s inside. If you put a coloured squash in, its easier for them to see (rather than plain water), or use a red beaker. Having a beaker that is suitable (not too heavy or an odd shape) can help. Straws might also be a good idea.
3. Share a drink together. Have a cup of tea or a soft drink with the person and make sure they're drinking during mealtimes.
4. Leave prompts and reminders. Make sure the person with dementia remembers to drink regularly by leaving notes out for them or putting up notices around the house. You could also set up a phone reminder or set an alarm clock.
5. Provide high water content foods. Supplement water and other drinks with foods that are high in fluids. Some good options include ice lollies, jelly, ice cream, soup and fruit such as melon. ‘Water sweets’, such as Jelly Drops, can also help the person stay hydrated.

If you or someone else feels unwell with a high temperature during hot weather, it may be heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Visit the NHS website for details: https://orlo.uk/SJ75c

Did you know, dementia is not just about memory loss?

A person with early-stage dementia might ask for the same information repeatedly or forget something they were recently told. But dementia can also affect the way people think, speak, perceive things, feel and behave.

Common symptoms of dementia include 👇

Confusion and needing help with daily tasks – such as shopping or paying bills.

Problems with language and understanding – including often being unable to find the right word, or having trouble following a conversation.

Changes in behaviour – such as becoming unusually anxious or irritable.

Learn more about this, and other important things to know about dementia, by becoming a Dementia Friend. Join us at dementiafriends.org.uk
