Child’s Pose, taken first week of term 24/04 and today 17/07, 12 weeks apart, 12 weeks of progress 🧘‍♀️ Still not 💯 comfortable but I’m definitely getting there! Next challenge, Fire Log 🔥 This one is for you (and of course me!) . How long??

Kneeling for the first time in 6 months without it being eye watering 🎉 so I thought I’d go for the cr(ouch) too. It was a bit white knuckle at first but after a few reps I managed to go hands free!! I just need to be able to do it on demand now and not need a warm up every time I want to crouch 🙄

Progress Report 6 months post bilateral multi ligament knee injury (partial rupture left ACL/MCL, full rupture right ACL/MCL, posterolateral corner injury and segond fracture) oh how time flies when you’re having fun (not!). So life is pretty much back to normal although pain and rehab are never very far from my mind. I can do most things now but my right knee reminds me regularly that it’s not quite right yet. For example, coming downstairs (last pic), still painful, squatting, still painful, leg extension, still painful, pushing off on my bike, still painful, single leg squat, forget it, but apart from that we’re making good progress considering 😆 The left knee is doing great, around 90% improvement so far but it’s difficult to test it when the right knee is holding me back but gives me hope that it just needs more time though and will feel the same one day! At the moment though I’m stuck in that catch 22 of needing to strengthen to improve the pain but pain stops you from strengthening 🙄 Very frustrating and boring!

Reflections from a Broken Physio; So why can’t I celebrate the wins?? It’s taken me a while to work this one out. Everyone keeps saying ‘you’re doing so well, look at how far you’ve come! But all I can think about is how far I’ve got to go. At the beginning, all I wanted was to bend my knee and now that I can, I’m still not satisfied. All I wanted was to sit back on my heels in Child’s pose and now that I can, I’m still not satisfied but why?? Because my knees still don’t feel like my knees, they still can’t do everything I want them to do and every day the pain, stiffness and weakness is a constant reminder that there is still work to do and more healing to go and so it’s difficult to celebrate the wins. Is this a surprise, no. I knew this. I knew I was in it for the long haul. My first thought when the accident happened was “well that’s at least 9 months of rehab” My consultant has predicted nearer 12-18 months, given the extent of the damage which is probably more realistic. So it’s early days really. Does this make it any easier. Yes & No. I have to accept that this will take time (easier said than done). It is normal to have these symptoms at this stage but it also proves my point that I still do have a long way to go before my knees start to feel normal again (if they ever will?!). I would usually explain this to patients in terms of healing time and reassure them that everything will be ok. I would look at their progress and I would celebrate the goals that they’ve achieved and move onto the next ones until we finally get there but applying this to myself is a different matter! I do need to be more patient with myself and the recovery process but this might just explain why I can’t celebrate the wins just yet? I will persevere though and one day I will look back and realise that every win was a stepping stone back to the life I once knew. I will continue to share my thoughts and progress on this Rehab journey, one that definitely requires patience and plenty of perseverance

Summer goals, come on, we’re nearly there!! 18 weeks and counting but I do believe I made touch down today… only for a second while I took the photo, but that’s progress and gives me hope that I will paddle board again and I will sit back on my heels again 💪🤞💪

Comparison with 4 weeks ago and you can definitely see an improvement in range of movement. It’s good to see change over time. Day by day it’s easy to think that progress is slow and that you’re not getting anywhere but every workout makes a difference 💪

Comparison with just over 2 weeks ago (although feels like more!). I was expecting to see more of a difference, but the form and range was much the same (top row, most recent). The biggest difference was in how it felt. 2 weeks ago I was using the TRX to lower myself into range, today it was just using it to assist when I needed it. I felt much stronger moving through range, less pain and it definitely felt more normal!
