If your brain catastrophises about whether you will get to sleep, you have sleep anxiety.

A great way to fight it is to find a mantra to repeat back to the catastrophising thoughts (rather than entering into a dialogue with the anxious thoughts where you torture yourself with worst case scenarios).

The problem is that the more you tell yourself that you “must” get to sleep, that you “won’t cope” if you don’t get sleep, the more pressure you feel, the more anxious you feel, and the more your brain resists sleep.

Take the pressure off by repeatedly saying one of these mantras to yourself before bed and, once you are in bed, focus only on the mantra and how good it feels to be resting that body in your cosy bed. This way, you’ll reset how your brain thinks about sleep.

You can also train your brain to feel less anxious about sleep. I’ve created a FREE mini download so you can try it out.

Follow me .neurofix, and click on my bio to access your free Sleep-Anxiety download.

You can access all our hypnosis downloads (including full length ones for Sleep and a specific Sunday Scaries one) and loads of free ones so you can try first to see if it’s for you.

Stop playing the “what if” game, it’s just a way of torturing yourself with the worst possible outcome to any situation, no matter how unlikely.

Really, it’s just a nasty version of the childhood game of “let’s pretend”.

Or play the game differently.

If you insist on thinking about the worst outcome, it’s only fair to consider two other possibilities: the best possible outcome, no matter how ridiculously optimistic; and the most realistic outcome, the one where everything turns out just fine.

Getting comfortable with silence is a super-power, especially if you are a people pleaser who finds themselves regularly agreeing to things they don’t want to be doing.

Practice holding that silence in the mirror, practice with your friends and loved ones. Perfect the neutral expression. Count to ten in your head, if you need to.

Silence is a great power leveller as well as giving you space to think about what you really want in any situation.

“I can’t do this”; “I can’t cope”; “I’ll be rubbish”; “I’ll fail”; “they are all laughing at me”.

You don’t have to take your anxious thoughts seriously. They are just thoughts. Not facts. So often just nonsense.

You could think of them like an untuned radio in another room (no need to tune it, or fight to turn them off, just let them drone on). If you hear something helpful, great. If not, don’t tune in.

When you tell someone about something awful which has happened to you (I’m thinking death/ loss/ divorce/ trauma/ illness) it’s a very human response for them to want to make you feel better.

That’s when the urge to fill the silence with a platitude like “everything happens for a reason” becomes overwhelming.

I have had more than one client who has had this said to them after the loss of a child.

Really, when you tell someone the terrible thing that has happened, you simply want them to hear it, to really listen and to hold the pain with you for those moments.

You really just want to hear them say “I’m so sorry, that’s terrible”.

The worst has happened. Nothing you say will make things better. Keep it simple.

Listening to our hypnosis downloads every day for a week or two will make it so much easier to live the life you want to live. We have 100s of titles for adults (including specific titles for Trauma, Anxiety and Self Esteem), teens (including Confidence in Appearance and Self Esteem) and children (including The Worry Fix and The Confidence Fix).

We have loads of free downloads (including one for Grief) so you can try first.

Being told to breathe through it when we feel anxious can feel a bit blah blah blah (though it really does work!).

We all know what we should be doing to reduce anxiety (diaphragmatic breathing, walking, talking, yoga, cut alcohol, sleep) but what about the thoughts you can send your brain to replace those mad, bad and sad anxiety thoughts?

Try these. On repeat.

If something was on fire in your garden, you would not try to put it out with petrol. That would only make the problem a lot worse.

Bingeing on booze and food will briefly numb the problem but, ultimately, it makes everything so much worse.

What we need to do is experience the bad feeling without trying to numb it. It helps to self soothe (find a comforting activity to do) whilst you simply feel the “bad” emotion, however uncomfortable.

It’s Saturday night.

If you have plans to go out when you want to be on the sofa, you need to start applying the “tonight formula” and you’ll avoid the anxiety-dread of social plans you wish you hadn’t made.

Be clear on what you like: for me, clubs/ dancing is a hard no, drinks somewhere I can sit down are a yes, and dinners are a maybe.

Then do the things you like. No more dread.

Remember that you have a choice in every - okay, most - situations.
