Y IS FOR YOURSELF

The most important person in first aid is yourself.

A first aider can’t look after others to the best of their ability if they aren’t looking themselves. First aid for the first aider is important and it’s something that is often overlooked as people prioritise the patient.

Here’s our top tips for looking after yourself as a first aider:

Remember to take time for yourself, having regular breaks (even if you think you don’t need them)

Keep hydrated and eat well
Debriefs after providing care are also essential as they provide useful feedback and closure allowing you to mentally and physically relax and prepare for the next event

Make sure you keep fit and healthy. If you’re unwell and infectious be aware as you could infect your patient. You don’t want to make someone worse by giving them the flu or the vomiting bug.

Ask someone else to take over.
If you find yourself struggling in whatever way, always ask. Whether it’s something you don’t know or you’ve witnessed something you’ve found upsetting, talking to someone about it is crucial. A little bit of stress is good for all, but too much will impact on our wellbeing and performance.

X IS FOR X-RAY

An X-ray is a photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.

It's typically associated with looking at fractures and breaks in bones but it is an example of treatment that is beyond first aid.

In some instances, first aid treatment cannot be applied and requires further medical/professional help. Knowing when NOT to apply first can save lives. Join one of our training courses to learn more.

V IS FOR VERTIGO

Vertigo is a sensation of feeling off-balance. If you have these dizzy spells, you might feel like you are spinning or that the world around you is spinning.

It can cause nausea, fainting, and loss of balance which can lead to injury.

Knowing the signs of vertigo and how to assist someone experiencing it can go a long way in preventing further harm.

U IS FOR ULCERS

You might have to deal with a patient suffering from symptoms caused by ulcers. It can be key to recognise symptoms as they can help you know if it is safe and effective to apply first aid.

Stomach ulcers, which are also known as gastric ulcers, are painful sores in the stomach lining. Stomach ulcers are a type of peptic ulcer disease. Peptic ulcers are any ulcers that affect both the stomach and small intestines.

Stomach ulcers occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects your stomach from digestive juices is reduced. This allows the digestive acids to eat away at the tissues that line the stomach, causing an ulcer.

Stomach ulcers may be easily cured, but they can become severe without proper treatment.

If you'd like to know about causes, symptoms and treatments, and how to deal with them in a first aid setting - book a course - link in bio!
