Walk This Way Teignmouth

Walk This Way Teignmouth Exploits of the weekly Walk This Way group in Teignmouth. Walk This Way is a scheme organised through Teignbridge District Council.

It offers a variety of walks in Teignbridge welcoming all ages and abilities. Get walking, meet new people and explore the town and countryside all on your doorstep - you will soon feel the benefits that gentle exercise can bring! In Teignmouth we meet weekly at 10am at the Pier. You can join one of two walks here depending on how far you would like to walk. Level 1 walks are generally flat and around half-an-hour. Level 2 walks are usually longer (around an hour to hour and a quarter) and may include hills. We meet up afterwards at one of the many coffee-shops in the town.

Super walk for 20 Teignmouth Walk this Way walkers this morning - weather sunny though chilly however once walking we soon warmed up !

16 of us went on the bus from to St Marychurch where as arranged we met up with another 4 of our walkers

We started with a circuit of the lovely Tessier Gardens - lots of very porky looking squirrels around almost being hand fed by other visitors to the gardens 😁

Several of our walkers hadn’t been in the gardens before - we must do a return visit in 2026 when either the wisteria or dahlias are in bloom !

We then enjoyed a stroll along Babbacombe Downs with it’s stunning views out along the coast to East Devon and beyond👍🏻

Next we did a circuit of Walls Hill exploring new pathways and again seeing some wonderful coastal views - due to recent wet weather the paths were rather muddy thankfully none of us took a tumble 😁

At the end of the walk 2 went for coffee,11 of us went to The Royal for our drinks and the others left for home - 11 of us caught the 1.50pm bus home arriving in Teignmouth around 2.20pm

REMINDER next week DEC 10th it’s our annual WTW Christmas LUNCH 12.30pm at the ALICE CROSS CENTRE in town

The lunch is now fully booked and paid for by our WTW walkers - many thanks to Margaret and Ann P for collecting and collating menus choices and our payments

Next week we’ll have a shorter town centre walk starting later than usual please meet up near the pier by 11am . Neil will be leading the walk where we’ll be singing one or 2 verses of a Christmas Carol outside local churches - or you prefer you may just meet us in time for our lunch at the Alice Cross Centre 👍🏻

As planned this morning‘s walk was a guided tour of the scattered 49 Commonwealth War Graves in Teignmouth old cemetery - 4 of us went up from town on the 80 Country bus to Hazeldown school then met up with another 8 walkers at the cemetery - we had a lovely surprise as one of our original WTW walkers Chris P joined us for the tour 👍🏻

We started from by the Commonwealth War Graves noticeboard near the cemetery buildings where I added a new Remembrance wreath on behalf of Friends of Teignmouth Cemetery volunteers

I then lead the walkers on a full tour through of the cemetery stopping at all 49 CWG to give a little information about name, service rank ,date and age at death plus cause of death

The youngest was aged 16 and eldest 61 when they lost their lives , 2 died in gun accidents in the UK ,4 died along with family members during WW2 enemy bombing raids on Teignmouth , others died of flu,TB ,pneumonia, bronchitis or during surgery, one as a result of gassing, one during a Luftwaffe raid on RN barracks in Plymouth ,another during the Plymouth Blitz when a communal air raid shelter in Plymouth was hit killing 72 people …

NB the majority of the official CWG memorial stones are Portland stone,8 are Stancliffe stone and a couple are Botticino stone

We were half way through the tour when the light drizzle started however everyone seemed keen to carry on so we did …finishing by 11.30am - thankfully the rain had eased by then

4 of us walked back to town and went to a cafe for our refreshments

Apologies to all who got wet footwear and had lots of grass cuttings to remove from their shoes at home !

REMINDER next week‘s walk on Weds Nov 5th will be lead by Ann P - meet up near the pier by 10am ready to leave at 10.15am for the walk over to Shaldon where you’ll either be going up to the Homeyards Botanical Gardens or onto Ness Beach via Ness Tunnel👍🏻
