Social Media & the Five Elements: Why does social media feel so triggering?
I have a complicated relationship with social media, I always have done. I want to use it to share my work and connect with others, but if I'm honest, I often find myself feeling irritated, overwhelmed, or even jealous when I scroll. This is heightened when I am feeling stretched or vulnerable in other areas of my life.
It’s taken me a while to understand why and actually, applying the Five Element theory has given me some real insight.
✨ Metal & Authenticity – Metal seeks truth, depth, and integrity. But social media often feels like the opposite—highlight reels, filters, and carefully curated success stories. No wonder it can feel so hollow at times.
🔥 Fire & Validation – Fire craves connection, joy, and recognition. The likes, comments, and dopamine hits of social media feed this, but also leave us craving more. When engagement is low, it can feel like rejection.
🌳 Wood & Comparison – Wood thrives on growth and purpose, but scrolling can make us feel like we're falling behind. Seeing others "further ahead" can bring up frustration and self-doubt.
💧 Water & Overstimulation – Water values quiet reflection, but social media is loud. The constant input can be draining, leaving us feeling scattered or restless.
🟠 Earth & Connection – Earth longs for real, nourishing relationships, but social media offers surface-level interactions. No wonder it can leave us feeling empty instead of fulfilled.
So what do we do? For me, it’s about using social media with intention, and trust me I am still learning every day, and often failing in setting boundaries. It is about reminding myself that what I see is not the full picture. I try to focus on creating rather than consuming—sharing from the heart instead of getting lost in comparison.
Does this resonate with you? How does social media make you feel? I'd love to hear. This is a daily quandary for me. I have been close to leaving socials all together many times, but as a small business this feels so scary...💬
