🎬🍿 Weekly Movie Afternoon at Roden Hall 🍿🎬

This week our residents came together for their much-loved weekly movie afternoon, and it was extra special. As Olive is a regular movie-goer, we chose her favourite film, 'How Green Was My Valley'. She was absolutely thrilled, sharing that it has always been her favourite and that she hadn’t seen it for years.

Jack made the afternoon even better by preparing fresh popcorn for everyone to enjoy, alongside fizzy drinks and sweet treats from our pic ’n’ mix.

These movie afternoons are a wonderful way for residents to relax, unwind and enjoy a great film together — and they’re always something to look forward to.

A Special Visit at Roden Hall Care Home

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome back Teddy and Carlos from Knightley Alpaca Trekking. The two enjoyed meeting residents around the home and visiting rooms, bringing smiles to familiar faces and those meeting them for the first time.

There were lots of cuddles from Teddy and plenty of smiles from Carlos, while Margaret was amazed at how friendly they were as they followed her around the garden! Peter was overjoyed to have alpacas visit his room and even complimented Carlos on his “beautiful smile.”

Animal visits like these are a wonderful form of therapy and always fill the home with joy. Everyone is already asking when they’ll be back!

☕🪙 Royal Mint Reminiscence Morning at Roden Hall 🪙☕

Residents came together in Berrington’s Café for a wonderful reminiscence session, enjoying coffee and biscuits while exploring a Royal Mint Reminiscence Box. The interactive exhibits sparked lively discussions about coins, currency, and life before and after decimalisation, with many residents sharing memories of how prices and daily life changed over the years.

The group also enjoyed learning about modern coin designs, including the new coins featuring King Charles III and their nature-inspired imagery, as well as the production of medals for the Armed Forces and Emergency Services. Residents were especially interested in seeing and handling medals brought in by our Lifestyle Assistant from her time in the RAF.

Everyone was fascinated by the session, particularly Ron, who was intrigued by the technology of the box. A big thank you to the Royal Mint for helping us reflect, reminisce, and enjoy such an engaging morning together.

🎳🎮 Nintendo Switch Bowling at Roden Hall 🎮🎳

We enjoyed a brilliant Nintendo Switch bowling session yesterday, and it was lovely to see some new faces embracing new technology! Susan and John picked up the controls in no time and enjoyed a few ends alongside Pam and Nan.

Seasoned pro Pam won each game once again — proof that practice really does make perfect! While everyone loves a strike, none more so than Karen, whose goal is to one day beat our reigning champion. Watch this space!

A fun, active session full of laughter and friendly competition.

🎯🍻 Gentlemen’s Evening at Roden Hall 🍻🎯

The lovely gentlemen of Roden Hall came together for a fantastic evening filled with fun, food, and great company. We were delighted to set up a dart board, and everyone enjoyed a few friendly games before settling down to chat and relax.

Our chef Jack treated everyone to a delicious pub-style buffet, including some very tasty pretzels that were a big hit! With stories shared and a few favourite tipples enjoyed, it was a wonderful way to bring the gents together and create some special memories.

🎶 A Joyful Start to the Year at Roden Hall 🎶

This week, we were delighted to welcome Carolyn from Kiddley Divey, who brought plenty of energy and excitement to kick off the new year. Residents loved singing along to the music and joining in with the movements — it was wonderful to see everyone so engaged.

A special well done to Christine, who was top of the class and scored full marks in the music quiz — she was thrilled to know all the answers! David also had a fantastic time, tapping his feet along to the music with a big smile throughout.

Everyone had a wonderful time, and we’re already looking forward to our future sessions. It’s always such a fun and uplifting way to get everyone moving.

🧶 Meet Dot – A Lovely New Face at Knit & Natter 🧶

We’re delighted to introduce Dot, a wonderful recent addition to our Public Knit and Natter group, which takes place on the first Wednesday of each month. Dot often joins us with her granddaughter, and both are incredibly talented knitters and crocheters. Each month they bring along the projects they’re working on, and we absolutely love having them as part of the group.

This week, Dot brought along a folder filled with her beautiful creations from when she attended a knitting club in Scotland — it was a real treat for everyone to see. Dot has also very kindly offered to take away our box of knitted squares and turn them into blankets and throws for donation.

Thank you, Dot — we look forward to welcoming you back next month.

Celebrating National Bird Day

On Monday, we marked National Bird Day with a cosy gathering in the café. With the snow putting outdoor bird spotting on hold, residents enjoyed sharing and discussing interesting bird fact cards instead.

One favourite fact was learning that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs, with feathers originally developed for insulation long before flight — sparking lots of great conversation. The afternoon also included chatting about favourite birds, planning to refill the bird feeders, and watching a short bird documentary.

Tea, coffee, hot chocolates, and plenty of biscuits made it the perfect relaxing afternoon.

A Create & Cosy Morning at Roden Hall

The ladies enjoyed a lovely create and cosy morning in the craft room, designing beautiful handmade cards. They spent time browsing through the materials, choosing their favourites, and carefully laying out their designs on the page.

The standout favourite of the day was the ‘Deco Delight’ pad, with its striking colours and patterns — the ladies’ stylish dresses even caught everyone’s eye! Residents are becoming real experts at card making and love creating personalised cards for their families.

A wonderful morning of creativity, conversation, and connection.

End of Year Quiz Fun at Roden Hall

We rounded off the year with a brilliant end-of-year quiz, written by Karen and packed with fun rounds including Christmas, The Grinch (not very Christmassy at all!), picture rounds featuring actors in festive costumes, and Christmas music.

It was a very tight competition with the lead changing round by round, going right down to the final music round where residents had to guess the song and artist. Team Tinsel came out on top, thanks to music expert Christine, winning a box of chocolates — which, as always, were shared with everyone!

Well done to all who took part. A great way to end the year together!

End of Year Celebrations at Roden Hall

Residents enjoyed a lovely end-of-year party at The Golden Oak, with entertainment from one of our favourite visitors, John the Piano Man. The afternoon was filled with music, laughter and plenty of singing along.

In true Roden Hall style, Karen joined John for some wonderful duets, including Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Happy New Year and Que Sera Sera, finishing with a rousing Auld Lang Syne that everyone joined in with.

Residents, families and friends all had a fantastic time, making it the perfect way to see out the year. Wishing our residents, staff, families and friends a very Happy New Year — here’s to another year full of fun, music, laughter and special memories together!

A Magical Ballet Trip from Roden Hall

Yesterday, residents from Roden Hall enjoyed a very special trip to the National Conference Centre in Birmingham to watch The Nutcracker, performed by the Let’s All Dance Ballet Company. Accompanied by Mia, Karen and Carer Anitha, residents Pam, Linda, Ron, Val and Ann had a truly wonderful afternoon and a lovely way to end the year.

Linda described the performance as amazing and said the dancers were beautiful, while Pam shared that The Nutcracker has always been one of her favourites. Ron was full of praise too and even chose a Nutcracker tree decoration as a gift for his daughter. Everyone enjoyed taking home a programme as a keepsake of this memorable day.
