I have never given birth, and yet this Incredible poem is still so powerful—because it reaches all of humanity.
Anyone who brings a human into this world should know that postnatal depression should not automatically be treated with antidepressants. For many women, it can be the result of a profound hormonal shift. What is often needed is a physiological dose of hormone support that the body is temporarily struggling to reproduce.
For those who experience postnatal depression, it’s important to understand that the word progesterone literally means “pro-gestation”—to support pregnancy. After birth, many women are left holding the pram like a crutch, waiting for this hormone to return to its natural rhythm, hoping to feel like themselves again instead of a stressed, exhausted shell of who they once were.
For many, this is the reality.
There is no single “normal,” because every woman is unique.
Supporting the body with the hormone it may be deficient in can make a profound difference. Progesterone doesn’t only support pregnancy; it also plays an important role in cognitive function, emotional stability, and our mental capacity to reconnect with who we were—and who we still are.
Sadly, this is the story for so many of my clients who were never told this. Now, menopausal, they sit remembering the trauma of that time—and they are still emotionally triggered.
Here, there will always be tissues and tea, because with a little education, at whatever stage you are at, I will support you in getting the correct care that is available.
